Pokeumans: Chapter 34

Chapter 34

They ran away from the city and immediately hit the road. Since they could not be spotted, they took to the mountains and ran up the hills. The adrenaline in their bodies kept their legs flying as fast as they could. They’ve peaked some small mountains and ran along the freeway. Even taking off the ring at the three-hour intervals didn’t slow them down; they’d simply stoop behind a bush and quickly take it off and put it on again, and off they went. They ran and ran and ran until eventually they found the rock. They quickly dashed across the street, opened the rock entrance, and entered the base.

When the elevator opened and they went through the way, they immediately booked it to Xander’s office. By the time they made it to the door, they were panting and their sides were burning. They opened the door and meekly trudged inside.

“Do you four have an appoint-”

“No…no time…please…we…we need to see Xander…right now.”

“I can’t get you in right now, if you’d like you can-”

“No problem,” Xander called, “Just bring ‘em in, right now!” They entered the office and Xander closed the door. “Oh, I’m so happy to see you again! You got ‘em all, yeah?” Andy opened his backpack and dumped the Time Gears all over the table. “Awesome! Pokextinction will not be able to find those gears; the base will block the auras.”

Andy’s body grew rigid. “That’s won’t matter,” he said in a panicked voice, “Pokextinction planted a spy or something. Now they know exactly where to get into the base!!”

Xander’s face suddenly grew dark. “…What?

“Yeah, we saved someone in Salt Lake and it was discovered she was planted with a microphone! We are still debating if she was a spy or not.”

“Oh no!!” Xander shouted, making Andy jump. He immediately got on to his computer and began typing furiously.

“Oh man, Xander, we’re so sorry!”

“I’m not mad at you! You were just trying to be heroes!” He moved his mouse and clicked on something on the screen, and then descended into clicking like a madman. “C’mon, c’mon, c’mon!! Grr, this is why you never let your computer know you’re in a hurry!!” Soon he stopped clicking and an alarm sound played over the entire base on the PA system.

“ATTENTION STUDENTS,” an automated voice rang, “THIS IS THE EMERGENCY BROADCAST SYSTEM! THIS IS NOT A DRILL. ALL PRT MEMBERS OF 1ST CLASS RANK OR HIGHER MUST REPORT TO THE HEADMASTER’S OFFICE IMMEDIATELY. AT THE SOUND OF THE SIREN, ALL STUDENTS, PRT MEMBERS OF 2ND CLASS RANK OR LOWER, AND FACULTY MUST IMMEDIATELY GET TO THEIR DORMS OF OTHER AREA OF SAFETY, AND MUST NOT COME OUT UNTIL AN ALL CLEAR HAS BEEN PASSED. THIS IS AN EMERGENCY THAT POSES A MODERATE TO SERIOUS THREAT AND MUST BE TAKEN EXTREMELY SERIOUSLY. THE BASE IS NOT LIABLE FOR STUDENTS DECIDING TO BE A BONEHEAD AND NOT FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS.” A siren was soon heard among the base. Just that message alone filled Andy with a sense of terror and dread, and he could even hear panicked voices of everyone retreating to safety.

This is what it must feel like to be in a Purge movie, huh?

“You four! Do not leave. I need you to stay here.”

“What?!” West cried. “But why?! Half of us aren’t even part of the PRT!”

“I know, but you’ve got the most experience with this bunch, so pay attention and tell us what to look out for.” Xander booted up a camera that showed the hallway near the entrance. “I know it’d be more effective to have a camera outside a rock, but we can’t do that without giving ourselves away.” Andy jumped at the sound of the office door slamming open. It turned out to be Troy, who had a league of other Pokemon behind him.

“Troy he reporting for duty…woah, hey! They’re back! Sorry we had to have our little reunion like this.”

“We’re sorry, too.” Claire said.

“Don’t matter now! I’ll need the lot of ya to surround the entrance. Have the tanky members bear the brunt of attacks while the speed team disables the lasers. As for everyone else, I don’t care as long as the safety of the base is preserved.” The team nodded and left the office to gang at the entrance.

“Hey Andy, wonder why Troy had you close to him when you were going down this hall? Watch.” Andy turned to the monitor and saw light flooding in. Soon grunts and some brainwashed Pokemon started down the stairs into the hall. What Andy saw next would have almost counted for a total massacre. When a brainwashed Pokemon entered the hall, unsightly and morbidly bent arms that looked like something out of a horror movie grabbed the Pokemon and they disappeared into the walls. But what had happened to the grunts made Andy prefer the arms. Spears came out of the wall and impaled the grunts, and those who were fast enough were burned to death from flamethrowers that came out of the ceiling. And those that were faster than that had a treatment of the unsightly hands descending from the ceiling and briskly snapping the grunts’ neck.

Holy cow. Even for defenses that’s…excessive.

Andy was sure he would be having nightmares that night with how uncanny the bodies looked then. The grunts just kept coming in wave after wave in an almost inexhaustible amount.

Suddenly, the base shook for just a moment as the light at the top of the stairs was suddenly and crudely blocked and Andy could hear noises outside. Soon the rocks gave way and Andy saw the most beautiful shade of purple zoom over the chaos and into the base. It came towards the office and leaned in. The Pokemon that approached was a Lunala. “I’m here and reporting for my job.”

“Wait…Lucy?!”

“What? Oh, Andy!” Lucy, now a Lunala, stooped down and picked up Andy in a big hug. “I missed you so much!”

“Yeah, I missed you too!”

Andy looked over to the monitor and saw a white blur moving past the camera feed and dodged all the hands that came out. It descended down the elevator and soon knocked down the door.

“What the-?! Who is that?” The intruder slowed down enough to reveal Vincent, who was mounted on a Solgaleo.

“That is a Pokextinction general named Vincent!”

“He he he! You can’t do very well, can you?” Vincent said. He leaped off the beast and landed on the floor. “I can definitely take you now!”

“Kick rocks!” Xander charged up a Focus Blast and fired it at Vincent, who took the hit. Vincent immediately countered with what Andy recognized as Giga Impact, which sent Xander flying and crashing into his desk. The Solgaleo then proceeded to leap at Andy, but Lucy’s great wing whacked him out of the air.

“That’s him!” Lucy called, “That’s my brother! What have they done to you?” The Solgaleo simply brushed off the attack and roared. Andy could now almost certainly tell that it was brainwashed. “I’ll take care of him. I’m coming to save you!” She tackled the Solgaleo and they both rolled out of the office.

With the free turn, Andy tossed an Aura Sphere, and his friends took that move as the initiative to completely ham on Vincent. He took blow after blow until he shook off his attackers, now completely restored. Vincent’s paws glowed and he charged at Josh, pummeling him with a flurry of punches and kicks.

Andy actually held his breath for the outcome. Close Combat is a devastating move on its own, but since Josh was an Ice and Dark type, it was four times as effective. When Vincent stepped away, Josh collapsed on the ground in a daze.

He actually knocked someone out?! This is definitely not the same guy at Elbrus!

West charged at Vincent, who quickly dodged and punched West. Andy didn’t know until he saw it, but that punch was electrically charged to use the Thunder Punch move that had almost rendered West as hurt as Josh was. Claire pulled out her torch, but Vincent used a combination of Extreme Speed and Close Combat to bring her to her knees.

With Vincent’s defense severely lowered, Andy charged and landed a Blaze Kick. Vincent howled and tried to run to safety before Xander grabbed him from behind and pinned him down, effectively rendering him unable to use any more moves.

“That’s enough.” Andy heard a cold and calculating voice from the entrance of the office. A Feraligatr stood in the door way with its arms behind its back. Andy could see out of the corner of his eye Lucy and her brother ceasing their fight. “My name is Rufus. I am this Lucario’s superior.” Vincent looked up and saw his commander. He looked relieved. “I have come to collect my troops.” Vincent’s relieved look suddenly dropped.

“What?! No, not now!”

“I’m so sorry about this. Me and my troops came to make peace and join with you to stop a greater evil we discovered.” He turned to the Solgaleo. “Solgaleo! I release you from my command, you are to do whatever the headmaster says.” The Solgaleo took it as an order, not knowing what he was actually doing, and ceased any aggression towards anyone.

“Wait,” Xander said, “You came to surrender?”

“Yep. We need your help with a matter that would devastate both Pokeuman and Pokextinction alike, so we had hoped that with our combined powers we could be able to handle the situation, but then it escalated into…this.” He nodded towards Vincent, who tried one more time to wiggle free, but was to no avail.

“You couldn’t’ve come alone?”

“No, I couldn’t. It was a safety matter, but soon things blew up all over. If you’re interested in my preposition, you five and whoever else you trust with top secret info are expected to join our base up the mountain. There will be no aggression towards you, and you will even be accepted with open arms. We’ll be expecting you in two days just to make sure we have everything settled.” He walked over towards Vincent and collected him.

“No, no!” Vincent shouted. “No, I was so close!” Vincent was hauled over the Feraligatr’s shoulder, and Vincent began pounding on his back. “No! It’s not fair, it’s not fair, it’s not fair!” Vincent seemed more like a child in a tantrum at this point. “I was so close! I was so close!” He kept bawling as he and Rufus disappeared into the hall. Some other Pokextinction members were gathering the ashes that now made up the hall and made off up the mountain.

“…Well, that was…strange.” West said.

“I still can’t believe it, though. He actually took out Josh.”

“Yeah, I know, that was scary.” Some nurses came and took Josh and Solgaleo away to be revived or purified while everyone took the opportunity to settle down. They were able to get all of the students out of their dorms and things to settle down. Afterwards they all went to their beds, but Andy could not help but still felt shaken up.

***

The following morning when Andy went to go get breakfast early, he saw Josh sitting alone on the end of the table, using a fork to flop his waffle around. Andy went over and sat next to him.

“Hey, you feeling alright?” Josh just looked at Andy and after a while turned his head back to his food grumbling in confirmation. “Hey. I’m sorry for all the bad things that happened. It turns out that the Pokextinction group wanted to surrender and collaborate to stop some sort of greater evil.” Josh’s fork snapped between his fingers, causing Andy to jump.

“I am so ticked! How could I lose?! I’m not supposed to be defeated by anyone, let alone a clown.”

“Dude, calm down.”

“That was humiliating!

“I know, it was a bad day for all of us. But we have two days, we can train more!”

Josh grumbled and shook his head. “It’s just…my pride was hurt that day, y’know?”

“I know, which is why I ask you let it go”

“Huh?”

“Let your pride go. It’s just going to make you more hurt with every loss you take.”

“But I can’t lose aga-”

“Yes you will. We all are going to lose. It’s a guarantee, but if you didn’t hold pride up to such a high esteem it makes for a softer fall.”

“But we’re suppoed to be proud to be Pokeumans!”

“…I know. Just…don’t let it control you, okay?” Josh looked down at his tray before sliding it to Andy.

“Here, you have it, I don’t want to eat.” He took off out of the cafeteria.

After eating two portions, Andy felt sick and needed to go to the gym. When he got there, Lucy and the Solgaleo were talking and hugging each other. When Lucy saw Andy, she called him over and whispered into Solgaleo’s ear.

“This is Andy,” she said, “He was like an foster father of sorts when they found me in that base.”

“Nice to meet you,” the Solgaleo said, “I’m happy someone was taking better care of her than I may have got. I had almost thought she was captured and put through the same things I was.”

“Where were you when we saved her?”

“We transferred early. By the time you and the group had rescued my sister…Lucy…I was already at sea.”

“Bummer. Sorry to hear that.”

“Yes.” Lucy said. “Well, I meant to tell you that…well, we are about to find you to say goodbye.”

“…What?”

“Yeah, now that we’re together again we will have to jump through an Ultra Wormhole to go back to the dimension we came from. Maybe we’ll find our parents again!” Andy couldn’t help but feel a little choked up. “We wanted to find you and say thank you for everything.” Now Andy’s vision was getting cloudy. He tried his best to maintain his composure, but the single tear coming down his face gave him away. It must look silly, crying with a completely straight face on.

“Aw, it’s okay,” Lucy saw the tears and came in for another hug. Her brother joined in, but since he didn’t want it to be awkward due to them just meeting it was more of a pat on the shoulder. “We’ll come back to visit, I promise.”

“O-okay.”

“Well…goodbye, Andy.” Soon an Ultra Wormhole opened up in a dazzling array of colors.

“Before we go,” Solgaleo said, “Can I please trouble you for a name? I’m a fan of Lucy’s.”

“Y-yeah, how about Luke?”

“Sounds great,” Luke said. “We can have so much fun when we come back to visit again!”

Lucy and Luke both got into positions as they both dashed forwards into the portal, which closed shortly after.

Is this what it feels like to a father when his children move away?

Andy quickly wiped the tears away before heading back out of the gym, ready for whatever may come his way now.
