How do Steam card drops work?

Do you need to reach far in a game / unlock a specific achievement for Steam card drops or do they drop at random when playing a game? I've never really looked carefully at how I obtained my Steam cards but for some games I've played, I see that I have them. For games that I've played a lot, I see that I've gotten all my Steam card drops.

I think you randomly get them based off how long you play the game for (up to a maximum, obviously).

That's for card idling though, what Marc was asking about was for how do they work for just playing normally.

For that, yeah they just drop normally while playing. They take a random amount of time to drop each time.
