It looks like the Nintendo 2DS, attributed as FTR-001, will start using a new CPU. The FTR-001_-01, name of the updated Nintendo 2DS, won’t have any new changes on performances or any type of hardware aspects, and it will be only for adjusting the system security.

You can read the document Nintendo released:

When even Firmware Updates aren't enough to protect the hardware. I think they should also update the 3DS's CPU if they want to provide more security.

They never explained the reason, but maybe it's because the 2DS use one screen instead of two, making possible an exploit.

One Screen ? Possibly to reduce memory usage too. As for the exploit, I thought that the 3DS series were actually almost impossible to hack.

Well, the retrocompatibility made possible the exploit for the Gateway.
The eShop games are impossible to hack right now, but they found a way for the latest versions, never said how.

That's a shame that a lot of people are obligated to hack games now. Well, still a good thing that the eShop can't be hacked right now. Shame to say that too, but that will increase the number of 3DS systems sold.

Good thing that Nintendo is fixing this.

That's a good move by Nintendo. By discouraging piracy, Nintendo can keep making a fair and good profit while keeping all of their consumers happy.

I'm still of the opinion that removal of region-locking would reduce hacking and piracy, at least a little.

The problem is actually Europe and its lot of rating system...
Some of they're really different and Nintendo is usually blamed legally for that stuff.

Glad they're introducing this update. Will come in handy and it's needed, tbh.

I don't understand how changing the CPU will increase system security. There may be some technical reason for that, but why not just release added firmware protection to make the system more secure? If they are worried that the 3DS could be hard-modded to produce this hack, well, there's nothing you can do to stop that.

Edit: It looks like there was a vulnerability with the program loader. I guess there was no reason to not get that fixed.
