So as I go up the stairs to prepare for this awkward moment to be with many people I have never seen, played or met I find the familiarity of the game and common interest to be something to share and as of right now remember. As I walk through the door of the room where they congregated I see all the monitors connected to Switches to be taken. Whelp, "no friendlies for me" I thought, so I watched and gathered some info on the players at hand. What happened before that moment, I signed up for the tournament. I told the girl putting in the info my epic gamer tag "Artisan" I got my wallet out and such and she said "Is this your first time here?" and I'm like
"Yep."
"The entry fee is $5 but since it's your first time you get to enter for free."
"What do I look like? A charity case?" I took that hot dog, and THREW IT ON THE GROUND.
So then I saw so many different matches, Young Link, Pikachu, Snake, Mario, Fox, Incineroar, but I figured if I could find an empty spot I could get some real practice going. So I did. I played this really nice guy who ironically played Wolf and I got some good practice. I then played Ganondorf on battlefield and he was no problem. So then I went to my secondary Meme Gunner (no Sans on this Switch though) and then lost so I'm probably dropping him. It was a close game though. Then it was tournament time.
I played Ninjafox who went Ness on Battlefield and then when we went to Pokemon Stadium 2 which then he picked Joker and got a couple dair to uairs with Arsene. Never played against Joker before and when ever he had Arsene to recover with his Up B I didn't know this but he was invincible. Next time I'll stay on the stage and try to punish. One of the guys watching said my reads were pretty good but I wasn't thinking and said "Yeah I like this character because I like to edgeguard."
I then went to losers bracket and played sango the Palutena player, the girl I met earlier. So of course I went Pit and it surprised her. We played on PS2, FD, and then Kalos. Three games in a best of 3!?! Does this mean I'm actually good!?! It turns out yes. I'd say it was pretty tough the first game, but on FD I tried a new strat. Out camp and then get in. Palu neutral B locks on but I was jumping around and angling arrows downward making me harder to hit. I was pretty good at avoiding explosive flame as well. Last game mid-match I used side B and said "Did you know Pit's Upperdash Arm does the most dash attack damage in Uprising", and she probably didn't know what that meant but if this was any other character I wouldn't have brought it up.
Then she said "Have you played this game before", or something like that and I said
"I've played since Melee but the physics are different." Then in the background someone agreed.
I then got to play against the big Triple D himself (aka King Dedede). My opponent's gamertag was Diavolo and during name registration on this certain Switch I said "That sounds like an SMT spell." This man said something along the lines of:
"Your a man of culture/game knowledge because most people would say that sounds like a Persona spell."
"I played the spinoffs on the 3DS."
"Overclocked?"
"Yes."
"I've played Overclocked, Record Breaker, and Strange Journey on DS."
"Oh I have Record Breaker and the DLC I just haven't played much of it yet." Then we played on PS2, Town and City, and Smashville. I had a little trouble with the Gordos and Dtilt. I found arrows to be the most effective and tried approaches above Dtilt and below Gordo throw. Took a lead last game and called it a day.
Artisan is a pro gamer guys he beat two people, but then I had to face Mystic's Inkling and it brought back my lack of experience in the matchup and I lost twice.
So I played a little more with the "amateurs" to find my secondary and I tried Greninja against Cloud and I did pretty good so I might as well use him more. I then left wondering if they'll remember me as I might not have the chance again. I will remember though so that's all that matters.
