Stats are everywhere. In sports. In eSports. In your food. It's what keeps things interesting and helps you decide what priorities you take. Since Brawlhalla is a game with stats at its core, and 51 characters and counting, there's a lot to ponder on. There are 4 stats that are adjusted to fit the character. Note weapons and their availability also correlates to stats. You may see some trends in stats but for more available weapons there's really no excuse for you to try all the weapons if the stats are the same. Which they can be. If you play a character long enough you can get stances to alter two stats in their kit.
Stats
Prioritizing/negating one stat in general is never a good idea. Which is why for most characters there is hardly any stat that's below a certain amount. That being said, stats are already distributed with 22 stat point over stats that can have a minimum of 2 and a max of 10. Like something out of an SMT RPG. However this is a platform fighting game. Each stat has a distinct purpose and the variations are slight, but with your gameplay optimization they should count all the same.
Strength
If you like damage and taking your opponent down with an iron fist this stat is the next logical step. However if the opponent has a high defense stat it would still take them out, but keep in mind they have stats to invest in too. If you are good at making decisions based on dishing out attacks then give this stat a go.
Dexterity
Think of this one as combo insurance. You can attack with less worries about being punished. You can recover with an extra frame of invincibility. You might even make more combos with attacks that you can't with other Legends. If you are creative and like thinking about different ways to approach and execute then give this stat a go.
Defense
If you keep getting hit and you aren't good at dodging or reading the opponent then keep this stat in mind. Use this stat to counter characters with high attack or make high dexterity characters work extra hard in the edge guarding department.
Speed
If footsies (moving in and out of an opponents range) is something you enjoy then try this stat. You can move in the air faster as well which can help in any situation. It does not affect attack speed. Note in this game there's a run speed and a slower walk/dash speed so thinking about what reads you make in general might be important too.
Archetypes
Characters come from all walks of fantasy genres so they should feel like how they lived. Deep philosophy aside just try them out and see who is the most fun to play. I know it's hard finding a choice since you need in-game currency to unlock them for the most part so here are some archetypes.
Balanced
Jack of all trades and master of none. Two of these use axes.
Rayman, Bodvar, Diana, Ragnir
Off-Balance-d
These ones are almost a stance away from being balanced or have three stats with similar magnitude. Good for experimentation or a specific matchup.
Orion, Brynn, Ember, Ulgrim Wu Shang, Sidra
Fast Offensive
Just deal damage and go to make sure you assert your dominance. You will have no trouble finding a weapon choice you like in this category. Unless you can't decide.
Jaeyun, Mako, Gnash, Thatch, Ada, Mordex, Caspian, Fait, Petra
Offensive High Dex
If attacking is all you like doing giving the opponent little time to react then make sure you try one of these. Spear is most common (Mirage and Dusk).
Cassidy, Jhala, Mirage, Dusk
Fast High-Dex
Technical players can really take advantage of these legends. Mostly sword and katars users with some variety.
Hattori, Lord Vraxx, Asuri, Yumiko, Jiro, Lin Fei
Bulky Offensive
If you don't rely on movement to win then of course try these. A solid middle ground.
Queen Nai, Teros, Barraza, Azoth, Kor, Cross, Zariel, Thor
Fast Bulky
If you want to play the game and tire your opponent out then try these. There's some variety here so you don't have to commit to too many weapons.
Kaya, Sentinel, Lucien, Val, Nix, Vector
Bulky High-Dex
Pretty dysfunctional but these are a rare species. No one would see these plays coming.
Isaiah, Volkov
One-Stat Pony
If you know what your weakness is these guys can cover it. Good for Cannon and Lance players.
Onyx, Scarlet, Sir Roland, Xull, Koji, Artemis
Thanks for reading.
