After JENOVA helped him escape by blocking SAKUI's time-space path, both of them engaged in an intense skirmish inside the foundation before exchanging many words. When JENOVA had thought she'd won, she witnessed a frightening surprise: SAKUI's dead body melted into a puddle of blood that completely recreated his body as though it was completely new. SAKUI fled, and JENOVA told Rufus about what she had observed before he escaped. JENOVA's family now had their greatest barrier to break: defeating SAKUI without his immortality putting him back together.
Chapter 14: The Cure
(This section will focus on Rufus as the speaker) After hours of the foundation staff cleaning up the master computer room, I was finally able to begin carrying out Mother's new orders. After the surprise attack with the enemy, she had to leave the foundation in order to keep him from going on a rampage or doing any sufficient harm to the kingdom. The only thing she added to core focus after fighting him was for me to analyze the few remains he left behind before his immortality put him back together. I had no reason to question that; by running tests on it, i knew we may get some clue as to how his immortality gene works or anything that may be related to it. As the foundation president and a dedicated scientist, this sort of thing my specialty. The DNA he left behind was already sent to the lab for testing. I was here at the master computer as always, working to find a way to develop a vaccine for the new virus that invaded the kingdom. Since tests on the virus were completed, all i had to do was find some kind of cure or vaccine as Mother ordered. I entered several commands on the keyboard, then came to a screen displaying the virus and our life force across each other--JENOVA cells. Before doing anything further, i glanced at the image in deep thought remembering how Princess Sephieroth's black water cured Vincent and Kadaj of it instantly. She was the only family member known to have the power to make any body of water a black lake of JENOVA cells, which also holds the power to heal us. If the water destroyed the virus, i began to think that by giving a simple shot of Mother's cells to the infected person they may be cured completely. The only problem was Mother's Golden Law that said tampering with her cells for scientific purposes is strictly forbidden. I knew why that was a felony in her kingdom: it goes back to day one during the Shinra and SOLDIER incidents. Both Mother and Sephiroth suffered much because of Shinra's abuse and the whole fiasco about using her power to benefit humans which she was strongly against, as was Sephiroth. If the humans had simply left her alone, then just maybe they would have been offered a small amount of leniency, provided they would make no attempt to interfere with her plans and will. Everyone in the family knows how that went... And i didn't want to start that all over again. That said, i had to find a way around that to avoid breaking the law. I got out of my chair and stared off in open space. I sighed, wishing Big Brother was here supervising me like he normally was. I realized how much i actually i loved him, my scientific ambitions aside. My personal byline was always science is my life, but this feeling somehow had me ignoring that this time. Without Big Brother, we didn't stand a chance against the immortal SAKUI. Mother is obviously no joke either, but she's the Planet's Ruler and Queen. She cant do everything herself; she needs our help to keep things from getting out of hand. I suddenly felt sad. I was usually one to happily oversee the research and experiments here at JENOVA Foundation, but for some reason i felt an unusual sense of worry that something very bad was just around the corner. SAKUI was already on Mother's Planet, and who knows where in the kingdom. On top of that, he is also immortal and obviously cant be destroyed by ordinary means. I forced my sadness aside and went over to my experimenting table on the other side of the room. This was no time for crying or feeling down; Mother gave me work to do and i wasn't going to wait until we're too late to get it done. If i dont keep working, we'll be virtually defenseless against the enemy. Big Brother, Little Sister, and Mother may be the strongest in the family, but they all needed my help and the help of family members working here in order to prevent disaster from striking the Planet. With Mother's law prohibiting tampering with her cells, the only other option for a possible cure or vaccine was a substance capable of increasing JENOVA cell quantity within the infected person to outweigh the virus and even keep it from infecting someone. I remembered how Little Sister's JENOVA cells allowed her to use extremely powerful attacks when under extreme stress or if feeling threatened. Abilities so formidable she could even fuse her being with Mother's and unleash deadly moves that few are strong enough to survive. However, if she was pushed to that extreme the recoil afterwards was horrendous. This is one reason she had so many near-death experiences during the previous war. Her enemies were killed by that unspeakable power, but she was also severely hurt due to a deadly imbalance of JENOVA cells afterwards. I began to wonder if the substance i thought of would cause others in the family to react in a similar way. I didn't want any developed medicine to do that kind of harm to anyone. I got to work at my table without thinking any further, focused on creating a fluid that would achieve my desired goal without any deadly impact. I worked in silence for several minutes, intensely focused on the task at hand. I used a very small strand of the virus in the formula as well. Of course, i didn't do any of this without my black gloves on and a protective mask on my face; that was obviously dangerous and maybe even suicide depending on what you were dealing with. Luckily with Mother's cells inside of me, that also gave extra protection from the radiation here. After i had finished, i cautiously sucked the new substance into a syringe until it was completely full. Taking off my mask, i held the syringe in my hand and laughed under my breath. My confidence as a scientist had returned along with my enthusiasm. I walked to the other side of the room and opened the door to where Sephiroth was sleeping. I slowly closed the door behind me to avoid waking him up, and approached his body on the bed. Carefully kneeling down, i moved his arm and slowly poked the needle through it and injected the fluid i had just made. I saw thin streams of steam emit from when i had poked him and said "Uh oh..." I knew that meant the liquid is exceptionally hot, and hoped Big Brother was too tired to feel the burning. After the syringe was empty, i slowly removed it from his arm and backed away from the bed, hoping he wouldn't wake up screaming. To my surprise, Sephiroth woke up miraculously without wincing at all. He sat up and looked at me, then said "Brother, what did you do?" I hesitated a bit, then managed to reply "I tried to make a substance that could cure the new virus, and decided to create something that would amplify Mother's cells inside of us due to the law prohibiting tampering with her cells. Because of that law, i had to get really creative..." Sephiroth stood up, giving me a familiar smile and said "You did a fine job, Brother Rufus. I feel good as new. How did you do it?" I smiled, then cried out in celebration. I also noticed how powerful Big Brother's eyes were which was a sure sign i had succeeded. They were extremely radiant with power and the steely glance he always had when he was in top condition. Sephiroth laughed a bit, then said "Now all we have to do is fix Perfect WEAPON since you've completed the curing experiments. But before we do that..." Suddenly stopping, i asked "What?" He showed me the arm i poked the needle with and said "Try to put out the fire, ok? The only problem with the medicine is its burning hot... we cant have younger family members screaming because it hurts too much. I dont feel a thing now, but the pain lasted about 30 seconds before it vanished. Younger children like Kadaj wont handle that well. I ask you either adjust the formula or use something that will keep the younger ones from feeling the pain before they get fixed. If you choose option 2, i want you to give the formula for the medicine to the employees in the labs downstairs in order for us to mass produce the medicine. With the enemy who knows where in the cosmos, we must contain the virus at all costs: thats an order." I began to wonder if i should tell him about Mother's surprise fight with SAKUI. However, he immediately read right through me before i could say anything. I drew his katana and asked "He's here already? Where's Mother?! I have to protect her and the rest of her children!" I tried to say something, but Sephiroth bolted right past me before I could get very far. I shrugged my shoulders and sighed; there was nothing more i could do except carry out the rest of my orders and mass produce the new medicine as he instructed. When it came to protecting Mother and defending her legacy, Sephiroth didn't care what it would come to or take to do it; he spoke his mind and fought the threat like there was no tomorrow. I began to wonder if that ever caused him to act carelessly. Regardless, the next war was just beginning; that was loud and clear. It was Mother's family against SAKUI and his galactical armies. Mother said many times that SAKUI was devoid of any emotion except for the will to rule over the entire universe, like an out of control survival instinct was all he had. Greed is all that ever drove him. But us, as Mother's children, we felt love for each other beyond words; and eternal love and devotion to Mother herself. Little Sister always believed that true love could overcome even the most dangerous enemy. She was a true warrior who taught the family that love can be a powerful weapon when you're protecting what matters most. Like Mother, she used this tactic to channel her feelings in that of her enemy to paralyze them and have them think or act in ways they wouldn't otherwise. Both of them had amazing skill with that. But if SAKUI feels no emotion but the desire to revolutionize everything in the universe to achieve intergalactical rulership, how could there be any reasoning with him? Was he even an alien, or just a soulless machine created in a place we dont know about yet? After that question came to mind, i assigned myself my own job and core focus: get as much intel and data on SAKUI's race as possible to find out what he really is. It was time to unmask the enemy once and for all.
