This exclusive Club Nintendo title brings the company's old pull-and-push toy(Nintendo was a toy-making company before making games...and they're at it again with the amiibo) to a fresh and wacky arcade title for the Wii,but is the product good enough to consider feeding your Club Nintendo coins into,or should it let it burn in high temperatures of the oven?
Grill-off with Ultra Hand! is an exclusive Club Nintendo title that you can purchase on the reward site for 80 coins to download on the Wii(or as of June 31th of 2015,you can't because the site will be down after that date, sadly enough),released on 2010,This will be a smaller review than usual, but considering the "price" they're asking for the game on the site, and that CN will shut down on one week or less as of this review anyway, than I guess there's no better time to look at this meat fest and check whether it's worth your remaining coins or not.
The game,as for the small fee of 80 CN coins, doesn't have a lot in store in terms of modes. You have a single-player mode,a multiplayer mode and rankings. The core factor here will be the gameplay.Thankfully, there's a tutorial to explain to you the controls whenever you want from the menu itself,so that's a minor plus.To play Grill-off with Ultra-Hand!,you hold the Wii Remote and Nunchuck like if you're holding a bicycle's handles, and then "squeeze" them closely enough to stretch the virtual toy close to the meat, and then press A and B simultaneously to get the meat, and then stretch it back to drop the meat on the plates. The controls can be rather consufing to execute, but takes a little while to get used to.After some minutes of playtime,it tires the arms a bit,but I suppose it won't be much of a problem if you have enough energy. The actual game plays like a small arcade game in which you have to drop meat on the places in a fast pace non-stop.Letting even one piece of meat released too early on the ground or not being fast enough to catch up with one piece of meat that can soon enough burn with the oven's temperature can give you a Game Over, and believe me when I say that you ain't going to get a lot further on your first tries(well,at least from my experience). You have to put the meats in the plates fast to not let the other ones ruined by the rising temperatures of the three ovens in front of you,and throughout the whole thing, you will probably find it funny at how weirdly wacky the game is,as simple, yet again creative as it sounds on it's first moments.Sometimes,I thought the controls would respond a bit late when trying to catch the meat, but I guess that was mostly because I needed to make my meats at ninja speed. The controls were implemented as supposed to in an alright way,and the single-player itself was very fun and intensely crazy...and really short too, like as I said before,as if you were playing an actual arcade game.
While single player is an endless test of skillful grilling wackiness, multiplayer is a timed match between two players, each with two ovens to take care of their respective meat.I wasn't able to play this game with a friend as of this review, but I did have another Wii Remote and Nunchuck to at least take a peak as to what the mode is,and I can tell that in actual gameplay,it must be chaotic. In multiplayer, the two players have a set time of 1 minute and 30 seconds to get the most points, and doing what you had to do to succeed in single-player is the same as here as well, because doing the two methods of getting a Game Over mentioned below apply here as negative points, additionally of you get your friend's/opponent's meat. From what I concluded of the multiplayer option,it does sound like a fun most-grilling contest in a perspective.
By last,Rankings. It just tells you what you achieve upon reaching a certain amount of points or combos with grilled meat, just for curiosity. One major thing that bothers me though in Grill-off with Ultra Hand,as you may have noticed,is how short in variety and options it is,resulting in a game that you may come back to only from every once in a while, which makes the 80 coin mark a bit questionable for the ammount of content you're getting in the end.
Grill-off with Ultra-Hand,although with not as much content as probably expected,is still a game that challenges your skill and patience as a decent enough arcade game usually would. If you're considering to get it if you don't have enough coins for another digital game or physical reward, and wonder if you should get this game or not, than go ahead, because it should be a matter of fun chaos to spend some minutes in order to get the highest score you can from time to time.If you have more than that though,I'd say to spend it on other digital games like those from the Virtual Console, because the replay value on this one is rather short, but if you still have the money to only get this as a remaining alternative, yeah, again,I won't stop you, because in general,Grill-off with Ultra Hand! manages to make itself up as alright WiiWare title.
