I have a story idea...

So here's the thing, my idea is a story that kind of interacts with the fandom a bit more. I would write the first book in say, a trilogy, and if the fanbase is strong enough, have fans send in ideas for how to progress the story. The best of these will be put together into the next books in the series. Does it seem like I'm being lazy, or I'm taking my fan opinions into account? I could use some help with this, if possible. When I finish the first book, I can post it in another blog if you guys want me to.
Again, does it seem like I'm being lazy, or considerate?

I mostly agree with what Erix said. That said, lemme point out a positive example. You know that movie, The Martian? Well the book was influenced by fans, deciding how he could realistically get out of the situations that the author had put him in. If it's like that, it could be good.
A little here 'n' there if you ask me. On the one hand, it's always fun to occasionally cater to fans of a given series. Great examples of fans influencing the future include the new Deadpool movie, Splatoon Splat-fest themes, anytime Michael Bay directs a movie...
But fans shouldn't get too much of the control. It's your story after all, and you gotta direct it where you want it to. As long as whatever changes to the status quo is reasonable, or any big changes can be reasonably explained, and the characters maintain their own personalities from it, you got yourself a working plot.

One really bad example of following the fans' direction is Metroid Other M. In theory, a backstory to Samus Aran would've been awesome as a game, but Nintendo tried to hard to answer all the questions from every other fan begging for them. What we ended up with was a blurry mosaic of unsatisfactory explanations and fairly unusual gameplay. It was an attempt to please everyone, but it ended up disgusting many of the older fans: I'm speaking from results here, not opinion. A lot of users really do hate Other M like it's a religion.

So bottom line, you can't end up pleasing everyone. It's your story, tell it your way. Fan service is a desert, not the entre.
Considerate!
