As requested, here's Bravely Default! I played this back in January. :p

Bravely Default

Bravely Default is a role-playing game by Square Enix for the Nintendo 3DS. Although the game has an original title, it is considered a spiritual successor of Final Fantasy: The 4 Heroes of Light, or "spin-off" of the main Final Fantasy series, by its creators.

The story follows the journey after the fateful meeting of four protagonists–Agnes, Tiz, Edea and Ringabel–to unravel the mystery of bizarre happenings.

THE BREAKDOWN
Gameplay – 10/10
Bravely Default is a traditional turn-based RPG with random encounters – except that you can adjust the encounter rate or turn it off completely! How cool is that! What's more, you can adjust the speed of the battle to help you grind faster. With that, you can jump 30 levels higher in mere minutes.

Exploring was such a breeze. I literally swept a dungeon clean of its treasure chests without disturbance from any enemies. I hate random encounters especially when I'm lost; Needless to say, you won't ever get lost in BD because there's a map with a radar of your character on the lower screen of the 3DS.

The only characters you will be playing as are the four protagonists, but don't fret! The core gameplay of BD is the job system where you can choose and switch jobs of your characters anytime. It's fun completing the skills each job offers. There are jobs that you will come across automatically along the story, but most of the better ones come from sub-scenarios, aka side-quests.

Story – 6/10
I'll try to keep this as unspoilery as possible, but you will come across a part in the story where you're forced to repeat certain tasks for not once, not twice, but four times if you want to get the true ending. Needless to say, this is part of the story for a good reason but is very tedious and anti-climactic. I mean, the story started out so good but the second half turned out to be so frustrating.

Presentation – 7/10
The chibi sprites of the characters are in glorious 3D over beautiful 2D backgrounds. If you turn on 3D, you could see how it looks even better; it reminded me of a pop-up children's book.

Sadly, dungeons are uncreative and each floor level brings you exactly the same graphics with a different maze variation and more treasure chests to collect. After a while, it kinda becomes a chore rather than an exploration. It's very simple to walk through and impossible to get lost in them.

Music – 7/10
There were a few tracks where I hummed along when it played but the rest, for me, was just forgettable. The battle theme lacked passion, unlike in other RPGs, but you're never going to mind anyway 'cause grinding is as quick as 10 seconds per battle, if you play it right.

Overall, tracks were repetitive and bland.

Post-game – 9/10
You unlock a New Game+ after completing either endings, as well as a special AR movie – it's an interactive movie where you move your 3DS around the room. It's also somewhat like a teaser to BD's sequel, Bravely Second: End Layer.

OVERALL
+ Fun job system
+ Ability to customize battle play style
Story was bland

Bravely Default may drag you a bit slow at first, but as you earn more and more jobs, it gets really fun from there. I really hope you'll give this one a try! :D

I'm looking forward to Bravely Second~

Great review. I guess I'll consider it come July; the story in an RPG is pretty important to me but I won't mind repeating tasks that much.

Thanks! So do I, but if you're looking for a really compelling story, sadly Bravely Default doesn't reach that standard. :( Hope this doesn't change your mind though 'cause the fun gameplay makes you forget that :D
Pretty much nailed all the points that a reviewer should hit. Also thanks A LOT for keeping it spoiler free because I just started the game a few days ago and can remain hyped for what comes next (except the repeating parts i guess)

Yeah no problem! I like to keep it spoiler-free in case someone who's planning to buy the game reads it; and I like short reviews cuz I only like talking about the core details. :)
A solid, well made review. BD personally irks me due to the various exploits that can make the game unloveable and the dreadful story that ruin the second half of the game, along with music that is repeated far too often...but I'm glad people like it for what it does well.

Agreed. I'm looking forward to Bravely Second to see if they've fixed all these flaws.
Your reviews are very organized. You also make fine points in each section. BD is definitely a great game for JRPG fans and people new to the genre!

Thanks! I wish there were more turn-based RPGs with new features like these. :)
How nice of you.
I think I'll buy it! Closest to a 3ds Dragon Quest game I'll get.
