Mario RPGs are some of the greatest RPGs in the Nintendo lineup. Most people wouldn't think a platformer wouldn't translate well into a RPG but the way Nintendo balanced the classic elements of Mario and RPGs into one game is an amazing feat.
There're also quite original because while Pokémon has about 3 games per generation and we're on gen 6 and I don't even want to know how many Final Fantasy we have now... Every game adds new elements like how the Papercraft Mario and Paper Mario are the feature in this new RPG but like most RPG series they do have a bit of a repetitive streak.
The last game, Mario and Luigi Dream Team; There is a great mechanic of shifting between your 3D regular RPG and in the Dream World it becomes a 2D almost Metroidvaina like world with RPG battles.
All I can really say is I'm hyped for Paper Jam.
