I have been playing MH4U for a while now and finally hit HR100 (~135 hours of playtime) and I thought I should list everything I find wrong with it or annoying, be it the game itself or the players! I wasn't sure whether I should make this a thread so other people can rant about what they don't like too, but in the end I decided to make it a personal blog! So, without any further ado, here's everything that I don't like about MH4U!
Game related:
- The game is WAY too easy for older and more experienced player, making it only slightly fun until you at least hit G3 rank! I mean, I beat Low Rank with 6 defense, High Rank with 82def and G1/G2 with 94def! In the older games, say MH3U, you could hardly beat Low Rank with a ~70 defense!
- The AVERAGE G Rank armor has more than 50 defense more than most endgame armors in the previous games in the series! I got armor sets even exceeding 850 defense, while in MH3U 600 def was considered too high!
- Mounting! That's right, the great new mechanic to spruce things up! What's my problem with it? It's TOO OP! You can basically just mount a monster to death using a weapon with high raw! Simply mount, topple and spam jump attacks while it's down to accumulate jump/mount damage!
- What's more OP than mounting? Canopy traps of course! You can literally kill a monster without even taking a single hit and without it even be able to flee, let alone move!
- Let's move on to the annoying stuff now, for example, the hitboxes! Sure, hitboxes in MH4U are MUCH better than ever (probably since there's no Plesioth to test this theory at least...), but there are some attacks that CLEARLY shouldn't be able to hit you, yet you got hit by them! For example, I'm fighting a G3 Teostra solo and it uses it's flamethrower attack and I'm standing BEHIND IT and at least one panic dive away in distance, but I still got hit, not by the Blastblight or anything, but from the flamethrower that was aimed at the completely opposite direction! And don't even get me started on Rajang's rock throw!
- A similar problem to the hitboxes, the new areas with all the ledges have more negative things to say that positive! Sure, you can mount more easily now, but when evading and instead of evading you just jump right into an attack, you know the system was poorly thought! Say you got a great armor with skills like Evasion+3/evade distance up/etc. and you dodge near a ledge, what will happen is that ALL you iframes from the evasion skills will be lost and you will jump right into whatever was coming at you, because you are completely open midair!
- Material gathering! There was a nice little change in this generation when it comes to gathering items, allowing you to gather two or three items at once every now and then. However, for certain things, the gathering/ collecting process only became FAR more annoying than before and I'm referring to collecting fish for ammo, bombs, etc., which you need a LOT of! The worst mechanic in the entire game might as well be the Casting Net thing! There is clearly no positive thing about it! Plus I would have much rather actually fight the Plesioths than just get their materials like that!
- Scraps! Besides the Casting Net, Scraps almost ties for the worst mechanic in the game! I have to send felynes to quest and MAYBE get the scrap of the monster they actually beat! I would much rather have yet another Mask / Dance system than Scraps / Leadership Palico!
- And since I mentioned it above, what's with your main palico's Leadership forte? You need to assign 1st stingers with the same skill just for it to actually do something useful in battle? What if you want it to fill more than one role? Well, thanks to the geniuses that thought of this system, you can't!
- The Wycoon! I actually like this one, but there's one thing that really bugged me! I don't like how instead of just adding more monsters to the game, they made the annoying material exchange thing, where you need to both unlock the materials for trade AND have an equivalent from some monster! I just think it would be best to either add those to the game or to lessen the amount of different armors available!
And a couple things about the players (especially the ones playing online):
- First off, don't be rude to others! I've lost count of how many times I've seen people fighting or, even worse, being beggars! About the latter one, you want to do a specific quest, fine, but you can't just come into someone else's hall, post your quest and expect everyone else to join you when they are already about to do a completely different one! What's worse is how 99% of these people ask for the Gog urgent! Seriously, just host a hall for that and don't ruin everyone else's fun with your whining when nobody wants to do one of the most annoying elder dragon fights ever!
- When you come online to play, make sure you have at least decent armor! I'm not referring to the defense stat, but the skills! Just a couple of hours ago, I got a girl come on my hall with a full set (can't remember the name, it was one of the GX series, the one with AtkUpM & Slow Sharpening) and DS, but no gems at all! I simply asked her to just at least gem out Slow Sharpening and she started complaining! People, I don't boot others, but at least respect your teammates when they simply don't want to have to cover you every time you are open!
- Continuing from the previous point, I have lost count of how many times I've had to cover for everyone else just because they can't keep their cool and they are leaving themselves wide open, so just to cover them, I have to go stun / trap / topple / interrupt a monster just so they won't cart! For example, I'm doing a Ukanlos hunt with three others and they can't even avoid the swim, so I have to go to them, charge my GS and smack it out of the ice before it hits them (I'm a greatsword user btw), risking taking a ton of damage!
- It's called MULTIPLAYER for a reason! I hate it when during multiple monster quests, some guy will just go fight a different monster in a different area than everyone else or, even worse, when they go and bash the second monster in the same area when a Steam Bomb is active, only to make it a pain for everyone else! When playing with others, unless agreed to previously, always stay together and focus on the same target! If you can't work in a team, then just go play solo!
- People just leaving halfway! Subquest complete? Don't you dare leave without finishing the quest! I've been left to solo things like Gog, Teostra, Dual Kushala, etc.! When doing a quest, people need to learn to stop abandoning the rest who want to beat it!
- Mounting, AGAIN! This time, it's about all those people who just won't stop attacking something when someone mounts it, throwing their teammate off, ruining a perfect chance to topple it and get 10 seconds of free hits! Anyone who comes in my hall and does this is instantly booted!
- Finally (for this part), there are all those people who just can't wait even a moment for their teammates! They will just rush in to a fight, only to get tossed around until the others finally arrive! At the start of each quest, especially for the ones in the Arena/Tower/Battlequarters, give everyone at least 30 seconds before moving on to the fight, so they can prepare (drink Demondrug/Armorskin/etc.)!
Part two will come sometime soon and will include everything I haven't talked about yet!
