I'm sure that you,if reading this, are aware that Mario had one cinematic adaptation back in 1993 known as the epically infamous 'Super Mario Bros. Movie'.Well, what if I told you there was actually another Mario movie released before that one seven years before?Yup,just one year after Super Mario Bros.'s initial launch on the NES in 1985 and its grand impact for the industry,an anime-style movie inspired by the game came along in the year of 1986.Its translated name was 'Super Mario Bros.:The Great Mission to Rescue Princess Peach!'.Well then, how is this loyal to the source material of inspiration?
This movie's structure is a lot like that of Alice in Wonderland. The story begins with Mario playing with his Famicom at his home-place,but out of the blue, after Mario's efforted progress is suddenly lost,a strange lady in a pink dress appears running away from some weird-looking enemies. The character pops out of the TV screen, alongside the infestation of enemies of chase, and then she reveals herself to be Princess Peach.Introductions aren't properly made after Koopa/Bowser escapes the television as well, and kidnaps Peach to propose her in a wedding, and then returns to the television(resulting in a "game over" screen to appear cosmeticaly ).Mario can only think about her after what happened, and after chasing some weird-looking dog in his grocery store(Yes,Mario and Luigi work at a marketplace),who stole the pendant Peach gave to Mario,he and Luigi set up on a journey to stop the wedding before it's too late. This movie is very weird, but it works because it's mostly set in the Mushroom Kingdom.I mean, this is a reality where you can grow up size by eating mushrooms, shoot fireballs underwater and step on clouds after all.
Either way, throughout the runtime of the movie, many aspects related to Mario's first grand adventure are to be seen, most noticibly the enemies, and some music used for the movie.I found the song that plays during the credits to be nice vocal melody to close things up for example.Remember how I said the movie was similar to Alice in Wonderland?Well, that's due to the aspect that some out-of-the-normal situations happen in here.Tea parties and invisible cats not included by the way. It's pretty bizarre from beggining to end, which makes the journey an unexpected surprise all the way,and at times,a funny one too.The animation, for 80s standards,is also pretty nice and cartoony to fit in with the movie's nature.
The cast of familiar faces from the game is also decent. It features Mario,Luigi,Peach,Bowser and other enemies incorporated into the story pretty humouresly, plus some few new ones for the movie(This movie could be considered as to feature Toadette's debut in the franchise).Let's talk Luigi for a bit, because he is pretty different than what you would expect him to be here.Remember he didn't really have much of an established character in 1986 compared to today. In here,he's more fond to money, treasure and coins than everything else, and moans sometimes.Yeah, that's not the Luigi you knew since your childhood,is he?
For the movie, the characters do serve their purpose and most of them do have their little charm as an added bonus.
One thing I couldn't comprehend though was the ending.I won't spoil it in case you want to watch the movie, but it makes part of the motivation of the journey feel rather shattered regarding a certain someone in the movie. The run time is also a bit short with 60 minutes of playtime,so the adventure feels like it finishes a bit fast when watching, but the experience is still a fun one in the end notherless.
'The Great Mission to Rescue Princess Peach!' is surprisingly a decent adaptation of the classic Super Mario Bros. to the movie business.Ones who played the game itself will find the references to characters and enemies within it to be funny and a bit charming, and the adventure should feel familiar for them as well.As for newcomers,I don't think it'll necessarily appeal for them, but if you enjoy the concept of a random and charmful world like Alice in Wonderland, there's a chance you'll like this Mario cinematic flick. It's strange as this movie didn't even get a VHS release for home audiences not from Japan, and not even an english dub version is present too! It's easy to search up the movie on YouTube in case of interest, and I can assume that thus far,it is the Mario movie you'll have a better and more familiar time with.
