A while ago, I managed to get one of QubicGame's previous games, Space Pioneer, for free through an offer they had going at the time. They tend to give away free games quite often. Same went for Zombie Blast Crew - in roughly the first week of release, they gave the game away for free to owners of Space Pioneer.
At first, it seems like a reskin. It kind of is. Instead of the sci-fi aesthetic of Space Pioneer, it pits you against a relentless horde of zombies. I say relentless... that's not an understatement. Unlike Space Pioneer, starting a few areas into the game, you'll quite literally be swarmed with no chance of respite. Not even between objectives. Instead, moving between objectives would instead slow the spawn rate rather than outright halting it.
The first few areas are relatively laid-back and more in the style of Space Pioneer's system. Get from point A to point B, relatively small maps, nothing too overwhelming or difficult. But once the difficultly starts to kick in... it kicks in hard. I'm only halfway into the game and if this keeps escalating, I imagine the final stages must be reminiscent of a Musou game with how many enemies they already throw at you.
As I mentioned, they don't stop coming, not even between objectives - or during objectives, you'll be asked to stay in one place for ten seconds and that'll be more than enough time to get yourself killed if you're not careful. Space Pioneer allowed you to wipe out the enemies before proceeding with your objective, this game seems to instead force the enemies onto you when you're trying to keep still.
Maybe I'm not great at these kinds of games. Maybe I haven't had enough time to gear myself up yet. However, what I've been playing so far feels essentially like a "hard mode" of Space Pioneer set in a zombie apocalypse. Not exactly hard mode, perhaps, but the difference in difficulty is quite noticeable. This doesn't exactly feel like a walk in the park. I'm not sure if there's an endless postgame mode like Space Pioneer to add to the replay value, would be nice.
Overall, this is certainly a fun little shoot-em-up, not quite as casual as Space Pioneer but enough for your average gamer to enjoy. Recommended to anyone who enjoyed Space Pioneer or otherwise loves these kinds of games. Zombies, too, for the horror fanatics out there.
