I can't really talk about this one much as I don't have one yet:( but I see them a lot. They are, without a doubt, a long series of numbers. Some people may not see this at first because you might post it and leave it at that but imagine this. Two people are on a bus. They bump into each other and both of their 3DS's fall out of their pockets.

Tondo: Oh sorry about that. I....hey! You have a 3DS, too?

Hin: Yeah! It's awesome!

Tondo: Totally. What's your favourite game?

Hin: Super Smash Bros.!

Tondo: Really? Me too!

Now, this seems like a happy ending. The beginning of a beautiful relationship. What could go wrong? Now keep reading to finish this to see the ending.

(Tondo and Hin talk for 3o minutes until they approach Hin's stop)

Hin: Yeah, Marth is the best. Well, there is my stop.

Tondo: Wait! What's your friend code? We can play sometime!

Hin: Wait a sec, let me turn on my 3DS to see what it is. I never remember it.

Bus Driver: Ay! Are you getting off here or what?!?!

Hin: Sorry! I have to go. Bye! ( Get's off bus and looks at Tondo)

Tondo:.......Goodbye.

See that? A perfect friendship: Gone. All because of a code that was too long for Hin to remember. I believe the code should be shorter so that it could be something that people can remember off the top of their heads. Otherwise, more people could end up like Hin and Tondo. Thank you for your time.

Adding each other with a friend code is optional. If the person you want to add is nearby, from the friend list choose "register friend" followed by "local". The 3DS should search for the other 3DS via wireless.

It used to irk me, but lots of people who play online post their friend codes on forum, I remember @Gunblade_Hero didn't have his 3DS nearby at the time so he found his friend code on Google to send me it :giggle: So once you post it online, it becomes easier to trade, and locally friend codes aren't needed to add each other.

And Hin and Tondo could just exchange phone numbers, everyone seems to remember those :rotfl:

@Marc But remember, they were on a bus. By the time Hin gets off the bus, Tondo is drifting away on the bus. Will it still work if they are far away and their 3DS's were turned off at the time of meeting? ( I am curious because I don't have one.)

@Spinnerweb What is the "Phone Numbers" thing you speak of? Just kidding. But they weren't thinking about that! It was a last minute thing:)

Well...people still seem to use the friend codes...and I agree with Spinner. Phone numbers just fly around like nobody's business.

It's kind of tedious and I would've preffered usernames or something. But nonetheless, I'm still GLAD we can play online. Nintendo focuses on kids too when it comes to games, I'm thankful we even have online play . But yeah, friend codes are a pain to me. I'm bad with numbers in general. I blame Math xD

I agree with @rawrrie, something like usernames would be good. Like friend requesting with NNID's

I agree, nintendo should make a new Nintendo Network system so you can add people using their username. And you should chat with them and video call or share pictures just like PSN or Xbox Live

Are you sure Friend Codes are the worst thing ever for being 12 GOSH DANG NUMBERS LONG?!?!

I agree with Marc, you can add friend using local wireless, it works up to 10m if I remember correctly.
Alternatively, use can just use streetpass (but not sure if friend can be registered this way?).
Anyway, yes the FC is too long, I never remembered it (but I also never tried). Since I can remember my national ID number, I should be able to remember my FC too.

@Marc But remember, they were on a bus.
They didn't have Internet, so the FCs wouldn't work.

Friend Codes are really hard to remember ! I agree , it is a pain in the neck to remember those but of course there are many other ways such as cell phones , or Facebook , etc. . I also agree that Nintendo should have some sort of NNID username system for able to register Friend Codes . Still though it would be more common for them to exchange something else like FB or Phone # would have been better off in this situation though .....

I use the iPad autocorrect chooser in Setting so when I type "3dsfc" and I hit space it turns into my FC, 0946-2553-1158.

I agree, nintendo should make a new Nintendo Network system so you can add people using their username. And you should chat with them and video call or share pictures just like PSN or Xbox Live
That's the Wii U + Image Sharing and Chat.

Though I would normally agree with you , I like that Nintendo makes things rather different from other gaming consoles and it should be better for it will be more unique. Nintendo should make a special sort of application or something that makes friendcode exchange automatic or something streetpass plaza like so that this problem can be fixed. If it was the same as PSN or Xbox then Nintendo wouldn't be so appealing to everyone

I agree with you Nintendo 3ds friends code are too long. I hate those lengthe code it take me 4_5 mins to memorise those and after two to three hours I forgot that code again that is the reason why I dislike this stupid code.

I can't even write one properly without copying it off somewhere. Usually I write it in a notepad which I keep in front of me while adding someone.

Friend codes are hard to remember that is just how it is plus there are way too long that is why i have mine on my signature so it is easy if anyone wants to add me to play a game or something though i do wish they were shorter.

Friend codes are easy to remember. Even if u do not want to remember them, eventually you will find that you have it in your memory. They could not have made it shorter as there are so many people with a 3ds and if it were shorter, all friend codes would have been taken :/
