A Hat in time is a collectathon game that is surely inspired by mario64 and sunshine. Here are some things i think they do better than those games, as well as Super Mario Odyssey.
Big worlds: not quite as big as Odyssey, but much more packed full of fun stuff to do.
The way the game gives you new abilities as you find stuff feels like a zelda game mixed with a mario game, and that’s awesome. You can mix and match your badges and hats like zelda weapons and gear, while moving fast because this is a platformer not a slow puzzle game. Btw you have a umbrella to wack people with, so maybe thats what they were going for?
They also have a homing attack, so maybe this is just the best 3d platformer ever and is combining all the good stuff into one game? One badge lets me do a camehameha. Its so good.
It also has great plot, so yeah, mario is kinda beat on that. Oh yeah, and every character is voice acted, and voice acted well.
I love this game.

Collectables done right: main collectable or star equivalent is hourglasses, and they include story advancement levels, as well as some other challenges like hidden obstacle courses similar to the “mystery of the cave” levels in mario sunshine, some of my personal favorites. There is around 8 of these in each world, sometimes more though.
But there is also the yarn. One thing that peeves me alot about Odyssey is how many easy moons thier are and how little you are rewarded for finding them. If hourglasses are Odyssey’s triple moons than yarn balls are the singular moons, but they reward you by letting you make new hats with abilities! This makes the grind feel much more worthwhile. There is around 20-30 or so of these in each world.
There is also gems floating everywhere, the coin equivalent, but they can be spent on many things which unlock more levels,
And Badges that change up the gameplay, which can be mixed and matched to create new ways to play the game.
There are also medals that you can use to get cosmetic changes, like accessories for your different hats, and character color pallet changes!
