If you compare Ash with the rest of the NPC's he would be a medium, but in the animae these trainers work very hard to train their pokemon just to get it to evolve like Ash. Ash does special training though kind of like super training a feature in pokemon; Super training up's IV's he also battles to to gain exp. He doesn't battle pokemon just to catch them like red did catching every pokemon in sight. Ash asked his pokemon and tried to calm them before catching them. For us "Trainers" who play pokemon don't understand how hard this is walking countless miles in Japan; All the regions of pokemon have a link to Japan; And trainers that wait all day so they can battle you by stoping you and forcing you to battle. That is 20min. a battle so walking even Kanto would probably take years; Ash does it in one year, he is always 10, so to get all the badges in all those regions is impressive even if he ussually fails the big tornament at the end, it is impressive. (Me ooh Entei Im going to catch it, Ash il'l let it go it probably misses its friends. I dont blame the guy the pokemon is trapped in there alone forever unless released no wonder Pikachu hates it. Ash is a good man and a good trainer...

He is awesome.

You can look at Ash and Red as complete opposites. While is quiet , ash is open. I'll over look that because that is how it is with basically every Playable Charecter. If you look at it Red is the better trainer as he has accomplished more on his short Journey . However, I would consider Ash the better person because I think you're right. Though I also think they should have replaced Ash according to Region.
