I was fooling about on UltimateClassicRock.com the other day, and I saw that Avenged Sevenfold (formed in 1999) were on the top of the list of the bands they thought would go on to become heavy metal greats. (By the way, my first reaction after reading that list was: Where the heck is Bullet For My Valentine? :p)

I have to disagree. They were absolutely amazing up till 2003 (Waking the Fallen is fantastic album) but after that they abandoned metalcore and started politicizing their lyrics, e.g Blinded in Chains. I've not much liked their music after that. There are exceptions like Afterlife (2008, self-titled album) which is an excellent song, but they're few and far between. Their sound now also changes a little too drastically for my liking; at one moment they could be grooving metalling and at another they're another cliche angry metal band. (Cough, Nightmare, cough). I still think Synyster Gates is an awesome guitarist, though.

What do you guys think of them, if you've listened to them of course?

Um, sir? Avenged Sevenfold is my favorite band. Everyone of their songs is good except for the screamo crap haha. But my favorite songs by them are: Afterlife, Almost Easy, Shepard of Fire, and Hail to the King. Listen to them. They really are great songs

Screamo!? :rage: It's called metalcore and it's brilliant. Screamo is what loser bands like Alexisonfire do. :punch: I adore metalcore and their metalcore songs like Unholy Confessions, Second Heartbeat and Chapter Four. Afterlife is an excellent song, I agree. I haven't listened to the others... yet.

Screamo screamo screamo screamo screamo boooooooo! Screamo is not music. Its just a bunch of angry guys that are growling and screaming and it just sounds like water going down a drain. Its bleh. I like songs that, you know, actually have a melody and you can hear something else besides screaming and drums bashing like crazy.

I agree. But what Avenged Sevenfold used to sing isn't screamo.

I know that, im just saying i dont like screamo or deathmetal or whatever you want to call it
 
Actually, after getting proper headphones and listening to their songs again I've changed my mind completely. Avenged Sevenfold are pretty dang awesome still. Nightmare is a great song too. It just happened that because of my laptop's busted speakers before I could hear barely anything except the line, "It's your f***ing nightmare." It's almost become my favourite Avenged Sevenfold song.
Anyway, yeah. Wish they'd do a few more metalcore songs again though.
