I hear about battery backups to save old NES games how does that work?

It was an upgrade from passwords. Think of it like a memory card built into the carts. They do die out in time.

Even Pokemon games for the GBA had them (batteries in the cart used for time to work in R/S/E) and they told you when they ran dry. It's more of a problem on earlier systems.

Yea, way back when games had an actual battery in it to be able to save. Sadly, the batteries had to run all they time so they would die. they would actually last for many years, but as the games that had them have been around for many years they would usually be dead when we try to play them today. The gb/gbc/gba pokemon games had them, and they were like watch batteries. I allays have to check that they have a new battery before buying one of eBay.
