Try out every character first. Familiarize yourself with their movesets so that you'll know what to do in most situations. Once you're done, stick with a character that stands out to you and would work as your main, forming combos and strategies along the way while you use him/her/it.
Assuming you get the 3DS version, know the controls:
A- Attack
B- Special
X/Y- Jump
Circle Pad- Move, tilting the pad up will also make you jump, though using X/Y to jump is better for using attacks in the air
L- Grab
R- Shield
In fights, don't spam an attack over and over again. This will be very annoying to other players or will be the cause of your defeat in competitive matches.

There are plenty of techniques in Smash Bros., but you should wait until you get to play it before learning about them.

Like @srgs said you should give every character a try and see if you like them. then start practicing with that chosen character often making up combos with your moves. I recommend just playing around with the characters and have fun. don't worry about who is the strongest character. i like to play Pit In brawl and everyone just laughs at me and says hes one of the worst characters to play but do i care? nope! :cat: i have played him so much i formed my own combos and techniques with him that i can even beat the more over powered characters. so really every character is good you just gotta enjoy playing that character and learn how to use his/her moves effectively. start practicing on level 1 computer players and gradually increase there difficulty and before you know it you will be beating the highest level CPU!

Again, try every character and every possible combo you can think of. Try playing Mortal Kombat or something first to see what kind of combos can be made and then try out SSB. Having 4+ combo movesets memorized, unless fighting a pro, you have 70% chances of winning.
Combos should consist of:
  • Stun/Lower stat attack (stage 1)
  • Power attack (stage 2)
  • Multiple punch attacks, i.e. spam A (stage 3)
  • K.O. attack (stage 4)
  • If stage 4 doesn't work, special grab attack.
  • This is called a stage set ^
Gonna get 'em every time. Just be sure to make different variations on the same stageset or even make a special combo. These stageset combos are called Quints (5 stages) or Quarts (4 stages). Self made combos which don't go over the global stagesets are called Custos or Customs.
  • Quints - short: qts
  • Quarts - short: qrs
  • Custos - short: cst
That's basically my arcade beat-em-up style knowledge. Hope it helped ^^

Spam Taunt Moves. Use every move from every character out first, get a feel for the characters, find advantages in characters that you like. Characters with multiple jumps have a great air game. Mario is a great pick-up-and-play character for he's sort of an average joe but if you abuse your cape at the right times then you should be fine. The game is all about quick reactions to moves and what is the best move for the moment to use. Of course if you want to unlock all the characters you'll have to play as all the characters you're given in Classic/other modes on certain difficulties. You'll get a feel for it. Just try and build up damage until they are at a high enough percentage to be knocked off the stage and then use Smash attacks.
Moves
  • Special Moves (All 4 directions plus Neutral)
  • Basic Moves- Smashes (4 directions), Dash attacks, Grabs (4 directions), Tilt attacks (Up, Side, and Down), Crawling (not on all characters)
  • Defence- Rolls, shielding, air dodge, spot dodge
  • Useless/Swag Moves- Taunts (Luigi's kick does a small percent)

Also, watch out when you'll play the game, even though I'm a partisan of the "Attack First, Think After", you'll need a minimum of strategy, as being in the air, spamming the same attacks, or abusing the shield can be punishable*.

Note that when somebody use his shield, you can still break it (he'll be unable to move for a few moments), or grab him (not sure if it'll still work in SSB4, but that worked in SSBB and SSBM) to inflict damage.

Don't forget that being out of the screen (near the blast lines*) deals you automatic damage (1%/sec.), until a limit (100-150%).
And, don't forget to use the Training Mode sometimes, so you can try to make a combo by chaining both physical (A) and special (B) attacks, then finishing by a smash (Direction + Hold A) attack.

Glossary:
*Punishable: Term used by the SSB fanbase to describe the fact that you are in a situation where your opponent can inflict severe damage or even KO. Basically, you're in trouble.
*Blast Lines: Invisible lines that are out of the screen, on all the sides. Touching one will KO you instantly. Their emplacement vary between stages (can be nearer or farther).

Finally, be sure to exploit this wiki if you want to know everything about the stages, the characters, or even being a pro at the Smash games: http://www.ssbwiki.com/Main_Page
