Melee is obviously the best. Fast gameplay, great controls, great characters, and high level of competitiveness.

Brawl (I just kidding guys, I just kidding...)

@Markeese I have the some opinion (It was just awesome to play it with my friends)
It kinda started to suck with Brawl (Too much clones, horrible stages,a useless Samus and other bad fighters)
Also I miss many Melee Characters(Pichu,Roy,Mewto,Young Link)
and stages (Bristar Depths,Great Bay,not scrolling Mushroomkingdom)

It is really hard to answer this question because all of them have been great at each respective time they were launched. To me, Brawl is the best one until the arrival of the latest one, I own the 3ds version of the game, I have just played it a little compared to the other games in the series and I would say this is the best of all smash! I just cannot wait to experience smash bros on the wii u!!

Well I haven't played a lot of super smash bros games and to me the ones for 3ds and wii u are the best. The graphics, the characters and the items are all unbelievable and better than any SSB game that I played.

Melee is definitely the best. I mean it introduced so many new characters stages and the gameplay is superior to any of the others.

Ya'll got good points, good point of views.

I would say that Melee introduced a great deal of characters you are right, but the way the game developed was really fast, which didn't happen to the gameplay of Brawl. Besides, Brawl supported online gamplay which melee didn't. I mean, both are great games which have different features.

SSB4
It's amazing graphics and so many other stuff are fun and if you want melee speed in special brawls make the speed high (not really, but you get the point )

Melee doesn't only have the speed. Just watch a video of a Melee contest, then watch a video of a Brawl contest (no TAS for both). You'll see that you'll get bored watching Brawl (or maybe there are so few good Brawl videos that you'll only stumble upon very interesting ones) but you won't get your eyes off the screen watching Melee. Not only because they do everything fast, just because a lot of things happen compared to a Brawl play. And ok, SSB4 is far better than Brawl but still far behind Melee from that point of view.

So yeah, my ranking is
1)Melee
2)SSB4
18)Brawl
and I don't know where to put Smash 64 since I never played it so I don't rate it -.-

And if I'd have to put Smash Flash 2 somewhere, it would probably be between Melee and SSB4.

The smash bros games that I have played is Super smash bros 4 (both Versions), and brawl. Actually yesterday I played brawl and wanted to see the differenve between brawl and ssb4, and brawl was so freaking SLOW. So I would put ssb4 above brawl an day. I never played meleeor smash bros 64, so i dont know where to put them.

For me, I think it clearly goes like this:
SSB4 > Melee > Smash 64 > Brawl

Brawl wasn't that bad, but once you have played another Smash game, I can easily understand that many people says that Brawl sucks. I can't even re-play it, because the game seems slow-paced compared to Melee or SSB4.

Also, sorry to offend Melee fans or potential Melee-elitists, but SSB4 is superior to Melee. Sure, Melee had many great characters, an awesome controller, and many great things, but SSB4 also has great characters and stages, many possibilities when it comes to controllers (WiiU Pro Controller, 3DS, GamePad, GC through adapter...), and reimplements some of the things that made Melee competitive + some few tricks people started to find out (like MegaMan's 50% blade combo).

So, I'm not saying Melee is obsolete, but I think that in the next years to come, Smash 4 will also get a competitive scene that will be similar to Melee's, or even bigger. (And, if you check YouTube, you can clearly see that Smash 4 is already getting a few tournaments featuring Melee champions)

Haha ! Don't worry, I still think Melee is the best but you are right thinking it is obsolete even though you don't say it :p
But yeah, SSB4 has to be its successor, not Brawl because the latter is ridiculous (not just slow, I mean, who had the idea of introducing tripping ?) while SSB4 at least has options to disable all randomness. You can probably less let your skill talk than in Melee but you can let it talk.

Brawl may have had tripping and may not be the best for competitive play, but as far as adventure mode and general atmosphere goes, it may have been the best. Smash Bros 4 is the best for competitive though, there's no denying that. It's all a matter of how you'd prefer to play the game

I think in terms of competitive play, melee. Smash 4 makes it the easiest but still, I think Melee was best for straight up competitive play (unless we include the brawl mods)

As for single player options Brawl was the best, it had a story after-all (even if the conversations were rather uneventful)

And Smash 4 is best in general (in my opinion) it can be played by noobs or pros!
