Can you use the Wii U's gamepad anywhere else?

I don't have a Wii U and don't live near anyone who has it, so I was wondering, can you play Wii U games on the Gamepad far away from the Wii U itself?

No. It needs to be within a certain range of the console to play games.

Oh, I thought you could use it away, since you can play on the gamepad without the TV :/
