So I decided to chain fish for shiny Magikarp (you know Jeffy likes Magikarp).

I have a question, which route is best for Magikarp I am currently trying Route 3. And does "Reeling to slow" and "No bites" count as chain breaking?

And is chain fishing much faster and easier?

Sorry for all the questions it's my first time shiny hunting.

I know how you feel, I'm new to shiny hunting and I tried chain fishing too. I don't know which route is the best, but I can tell you that "Reeling to slow" and "No bites" does break your chain. From my knowledge closing your ds while not currently in a battle will also break your chain. Hope this helps, and good luck!

*reads last part and looks at DS which closed* Dang it.

Thanks so much, I had a feeling the "No bites" and "Reeling too slow" was breaking the chain. But I didn't know closing the 3DS while not in battle also broke it.

It's alright if you don't know a good spot I think any spot will work from what I'm experiencing I haven't encountered any other water types so that's good. Thanks again, and I wish you the best of luck with your Shiny hunting :D

Yea that happened to me too, I closed my ds and looked up some info on chaining and found that and was like "Noooooo" so I'm glad you know now because it could cause you problems later. Glad to help, good luck.... again :p

I'd consider myself quite experienced in chain fishing. Every time I've tried I've managed to get a shiny so I could help. First off get suction cups or sticky hold Pokémon. A Pokémon that has one of these abilities will insure you get a bite every time you fish. I always use one as it's too difficult without one. I use Octillery which is easily obtainable.
You should be able to chain on every route that has Magicarp so you don't need to focus on an optimal fishing spot.
Next, to stop you having trouble with reeling in too slow I suggest having the volume on or wearing headphones. When I first started I was having problems with this too without the volume. With the volume on you can hear the sound of hooking a fish and pull it in quicker than seeing the exclamation mark then pulling it in.
^ With these tips and with practice you should be able to build up a chain as high as it needs to be to get your shiny. My first shiny was at a chain of 70. Since then I've finished the National Dex and all my chain fishing attempts have gotten me a shiny at a chain of around 30.
I hope this helped!

Just a correction, Suction Cups and Sticky Hold don't ensure a sure catch, they just make the "No bite" happen a far lot less. It's around 0.2-0.4% likely to not get any bites in XY and 1-1.5% in ORAS. Still, it should be really easy to find a shiny following the steps above.

I didn't know that the percentages changed for the new game. Anyway thanks for the tip about the abilities :D

The thing that they missed was that getting on your bike or moving will break your chain. And in XY, te best place is the lake at parafum palace.

Glad to be of service:rotfl:

Oh, almost forgot, deselect all key items other than the Fishing Rod you are using to avoid accidentally pressing a direction button, moving and breaking the chain. Instead, just hit Y and you are good.

Oh I only have the rod registered, so far I always get to 35 before the chain breaks. You guys helped me a lot, if it wasn't for you I would be still be stuck on 4 or 5 before the chain breaks. :p
