I'm planning on writing and showing off something seriously, but... I need to know how far I could go making references to things IRL: I know it's OK to say the name of areas, people, song and show titles... but, is it OK to "play" with certain names? For instance: I kinda know if I refer to anything, I could get in trouble if I defame it, or even mention the real name (inspite of I intended to advertise it) but, mentioning icons/anything or person well known... is it completely OK. are they under "free to use" no copyright laws?

Example: if I were to mention Krystal's in a show, would it be alright? Would I need to censors the name? Or if I mentioned Elvis, would it be alright to refer to him? How about anything more ..."strict" if I were to mention using Twitter, lyrics, refer to figures in real life and other services/companies... would I be in trouble? Is it OK to use real life references? And if it is, do I need to pay?

How far could I go? Would I be OK using them in a more fictional story, where they couldn't possibly be defamed from the events (even if it made them look bad.) Or would I need to parody EVERYTHING set up for this? I'm not TRYING to defame anyone, but everybody's REALLY sensitive to stuff that can't hurt them, or even help them seemingly... Would it be alright? I need the references to pull people in the story, and make it seem as if they're living in the world, or rather it happened or IS happening in our time. Could I safely do this?

It's a pretty vague gray area, that's case by case. You can refer to someone's name, you can reference them or reference song lyrics, but you can't sing song lyrics. I'm no expert, but as long as you don't overdo it you should be fine. I think. Probably

Ok, with names it depends on the use. If you're writing like, fan fics or whatever then as long as you don't make any monitary gain from it it should be good.

It is a bit of a grey area though, just don't rip everything from something, or like a whole plot line or whatever.

I'm planning on trying to make money from this... so I need to sensor it, tight!? :( Ah... it'll still be funny and immersive...
