AC:NL Corrupted AC Save File!!

My nephew has AC:NL and when he turned it on today, his save file was corrupted. He hadn't played the game in a while but his town was pretty good. Does anyone have any ideaa on what he should do? Thanks in advance.
 
With corrupted save files in general, if AC is like Pokemon in this regard, you probably have no choice but to start over and hope it doesn't corrupt again. Is this a digital copy or a physical copy?
 
It's a physical copy. He's had it for over a year.
 
If it's a physical copy, then it might be an issue with the cartridge itself. I don't think there's anyway to recover from a corrupted save file, so he may be forced to restart (and hope that the cartridge isn't just damaged somehow and caused the corruption in the first place)

Just to be safe, I strongly suggest Googling about it and checking some Nintendo support forums or even contacting them about it before he does anything like resetting though.
