Do you think Mario games would work with other Nintendo Characters?

I was thinking today and I was wondering if Mario was a little over rated. I mean this guy does everything from hosting parties to golfing to karting and saving princesses. But why Mario? I mean he is one if not the most popular gaming figures so you can technically do anything you want with that guy without ruining him, but would it work with other characters? The Mario Kart 8 DLC seems to experimenting with this a bit adding Link and the Animal Crossing crew, which is cool, I mean, I'm playing as Link forget Rosalina and Toad.....
But how many of you would buy something such as Kirby Kart (I'm staying away from Zelda Kart unless you race with horses)
But seriously... This can open up new items like Kirby's strand stuff.

Having the same gameplay wiht different Nintendo characters, like Kirby Kart, I don't think would catch on, especially given that Mario is basically a staple of these games.
Having the entire Nintendo cast though is a fantastic idea (like in Smash). Having Link play golf with Samus would be pretty awesome and from what I've seen from the MK8 DLC Nintendo is slowly moving onto this idea. The only problem I can think of is naming the games. Nintendo Party or Nintendo Kart sound kind of stupid.

Kirby already had a racing game called Kirby Air Ride.
