a lot of us have most likely abused soft resetting in games like pokemon x and sun and moon to get shiny starters and even shiny legendaries (when possible), but an interesting question that comes to mind is would this be considered cheating? i personally would say it technically isnt, as your only manipulating something thats already programmed into the game (no external software or hacks installed), whereas people doing things like endless bullet bill online in mario kart games is obviously cheating. i remember doing some resetting on RE revelations on my 3ds to get specific legendary parts that i wanted to try out by just going in and out of the game in a window before the game would autosave (missions list, not going back to the lobby/ main menu) and this was very useful and would save a lot of hours of grinding online or out of the way streetpassing as the process itself was seconds to only a couple minutes long to change the received infection mission. What are your thoughts here? Do you think its a form of cheating, or no ?

I’d say it isn’t cheating a lot of people do it to try and get shiny starters/legendary and all they’re doing is resetting the game it’s not like they’re breaking the game or something

My opinion is this:
When using certain programs in SuMo, you can see IV’s and what their HP type is, it does seem unfair since it’s speeds up the prices tenfold but it is fair since it isn’t anything illegal and is perfectly fine.

When not using a program, that’s fine as well but it takes longer.

right, i do agree thats acceptable and cant be called cheating, but what i was specifically referring to when i wrote external programs/ software, i was thinking about tools/ trainers that allow people to mod the base values of data such as a pokemon's IVs, and make anything shiny just by clicking the available option, or tools for other games like certain resident evil games that can let people hex edit and give themselves infinite ammo for everything or certain weapons (like an endless magnum for instance), things that are normally impossible and such. i personally dont have anything against simply using programs to evaluate stuff like a pokemon's IVs, but the above sort of thing i described has made online gaming pretty messy for some titles. Yes, people get erased, but the admins cant keep up with the excess cheating perfectly when youve got too many bogies so to speak

Not at all. There's no advantage other than shiny Pokémon and maybe good IVs. Cheating is just giving yourself an unfair advantage, like infinite HP, infinite money, etc.

I agree but I’d like to add that making Pokémon with programs IS CHEATING since those Pokémon were obtained in unfair, lazy methods while legit players have to work to get mons.

I would say this is cheating in the sense that it lets you get something in a way that was not intended by the developers of the game. Sure, skipping a grind might be nice, but it isn’t the way the game was intended to be played. It may be harmless to other players online in most cases, but just because it doesn’t effect other people doesn’t mean you arn’t cheating. Now you just have to decide if you actually want to play the way it was intended or do it another way. Maybe the idea of grinding doesn’t sound fun, but if you skip it you may lose your desire to continue playing, or the reason you played in the first place.

i would say yes, but since those games are either single player or the possible advantages are posible in game and normally, i think is irrelevant

I think generally no, it is not cheating, as long as it is done right. RNG abuse to try to get a shiny pokemon or one with good IVs isn’t cheating as long as you arent using an external program to do ot for you in my opinion. Like for example, when some people start HGSS, they want a starter with good IVs, so they need to time when they start their game correctly to get the correct trainer id, etc for that pokemon. I think what they are doing is fine, as long as it is them doing the button pressing (starting the game during the right frame, accepting the starter suring the right frame, etc.) and not a program hooked up to the game that presses the buttons for them. External timers and clocks are ok too.

Tl;dr, rng abuse is something I am mostly ok with, except when using tools to help you internally (in the game).

I don't think it is cheating. You do not do anything for your system and its there to try ;p

I used to rng in Pokemon Sun to get shinies but I always had a seperate box for them. To seperate them from my shinies I actually got without tools.

No, I don’t think it’s cheating at all. If it’s a mechanic that’s meant to be in the game, then golly, by all means, proceed! :D

Really, I don’t know how it would be considered cheating. I mean, the developers put it in the game, so why not use it to its full advantage? However, it does waste a lot of time, so there’s that. .-.
