Do you think tiers matter?

people think that tiers decide completely how good the character is compared to other characters. I think tiers don't matter because any one could make a character look very good if you know how to use them.

like donkey Kong for example, he is the lowest tier in smash U but hes so good and has an advantage over a lot of characters and has high resistance to not get launched off stage. i don't play with him but i;ve seen a lot of people who provide a big challenge when using him.

Hes the type of proof that leads me to think tiers dont mean a thing

I think it depends.

Between two beginners, tiers don't matter because no one knows how to use any character anyway for example.
But between two pros, it's probably another story. Not that you can't surprise your opponent using a low-tier character with a new strategy, but once all strategies are discovered, you are pretty much putting yourself in a difficult position if you choose a character that all pros consider as one they can beat easier than others.

And I don't really see what you mean about Donkey Kong. All people playing Donkey Kong were beaten quite easily by my Jigglypuff and even more so by my Captain Falcon. Maybe I only met wrong people...
Palutena however, caused me more problems, even with a lower ranking than Falcon.

So yeah, I think that tiers matter but probably only for competitive players, not random people playing online.

Tiers certainly do matter, just not ones out or being made up recently. Competitively speaking the faster, more balanced characters are the ones that are chosen over slower ones, but it's all preference. My Toon Link can beat any Ganondorf, because Ganondorf players don't roll at the right time and because I don't give them a chance to hit me as I'm pressuring them (arrows/boomerang work great). They forward air, I shield grab and throw him away from me again. So any character has potential to be good but when facing human players more skilled faster characters are needed to win. Little Mac is one of the worst option imo in competitions because he'll just be grabbed around or approached with projectiles or moves that trip him up (tripping with attacks like Toon Link's arrow is pretty fun).

It really depends. Most people I know says Olimar is a bad character, but I've beaten allot of people with him. It depends on how you use the character really, every character is equally balanced, at least in SSB4. In Brawl..... Meta Knight was banned from tournaments, Samus sucked, I didn't want to get the smash ball as ZSS.

well i am a competitive player mostly for project m and smash u and i guess tiers can have a meaning but the way i look at them is what characters people use more and not what the character can actually do. i think certain match ups matter as well like i think jigglypuff would destroy donkey kong because hes such a big target and she can take him off stage and keep on killing him from the side with her air attacks.

so ni guess tiers can matter in certain cases but i still think its better to judge all characters off your own perspective.

I'd say tiers matters when one or both of the players is really good at the game. For example, back in the days of Brawl, if you're good at Meta Knight, you'd be able to wreck badly ((un)fortunately, they nerfed him considerably for SSB4 because of this). Although Ganondorf is considered one of the worst, if you're good at him and your opponent isn't all that great, it's still possible to do well with him.

well im from Connecticut and i faced the best ganandorf in connecticut and in project m lol he was very skilled for a ganandorf and at first i didnt believe he was the best but then people started talking about him and it was true so you can make any character good because he dominated people such as fox which i know should destroy ganandorf.

so you just got to try hard with a character to make him your top tier

Well, the thing with Ganondorf is that he was a relatively good character in Melee, it's just that the update to Brawl made him a lot more terrible (dropped from like mid-tier to absolute worst). So him being better in Project M comes as no surprise given they tried to make things more balanced there and more like Melee. Granted, Fox is still really good against Ganondorf, but you get the idea.

yeah i get what you mean they did upgrade him but it was still a surprise

I know that tiers just ranks character from the easiest to learn to the hardest to master. But whoever I pick I pick. I don't pay attention to tier lists.I picked Shulk because I have a fun time playing him and I stay true to my heart.

No Way!. I didnt pick my character because of his rank in the tier list. I picked him because he has been my child hero since the beginning and ive always loved the way he plays. I love his combos and his play style He has always fit me and I wouldnt main anyone else

Besides, if we do know why your character is where he is, we would have fixed his cons and make it pros? Nobody should care about some made up list that places the players from A to d.
Shulk is in the 15th tier, but I don't care. I actually make him like a top tier.

Oh he is, because when I look on the unofficial tier list, it listed Shulk as in the mid tier (15) but he better be in the mid tier because he has a lot of potential. Why would the person consider making a list this early? Oh well, it's fine for me because I know Shulk's ins and outs and his abilities.

Depends on the list.

If you're the 15th tier and there is 57 characters, not bad.
If you're the 15th tier and there's 17 fighters, then uhh.....

I think that tiers do matter , though it is totally usually dependent on the player's skill with that certain character . Tiers do determine the characters match up with other characters in some kinda way so yeah . I think that tiers do matter in certain situations

That is true that it determine type matchups but those matchups still doesn't matter. Like my shulk battling a link. Even if link has projectiles, Shulk still has the physial reach. that's why itdoesnt matter because it depends on how well you play.
