Easiest way to save Donnel

In my opinion, I think the easiest way to save Donnel from dying is to kep him behind the main action all the time, and use him only as a last resort if all your other characters are dead.
This is a good way, as he has quite underwhelming defense, BUT he has a okay-ish attack that could help if no more allies are left. (Hopefully no Perma-Death on other allies :p)

The problem is he HAS to attack sometimes. After all, if he doesn't gain a level by the end of the chapter, he won't be recruited. If anything, one should selectively weaken certain enemies for Donnel to finish off

That's true. But by weakening enemies, the next turn the enemy will go and attack Donnel and he will take massive damage. But yes, he does need to attack sometimes so levelling up is the best strategy.

that's not really true if you handle it all within the same turn. Also, you could try cornering an enemy to prevent them from being able to land a hit on Donnel. There are multiple ways you could easily handle it. It's only on Lunatic and Lunatic+ where things get difficult

Specially with Permanent Death turned on on Lunatich+, it is as hard as walking on Legos. If you could buff up his defense stat, it would really help.

well, he's a Villager as his starting class AND he's underleveled, so it shouldn't come as much of a surprise that his defense stat isn't all that good. The only thing he has going for him is the Aptitude Skill which helps raise his stats when he levels up

yes, but that isn't very much of help since it is easy to get him killed anyways.

It isn't much help, but it's important to keep this in mind when you try to save him (as well as for when you use him after the chapter). With some careful strategy, it isn't too hard to save Donnel

i had perm death turned on :p i like the challenge :p
i find that getting your avatar to team with him is a good tactic as he will level up very quick due to the tacticians ability :p

Um, that's not exactly true because Veteran only applies to the user. I think you're confusing the Veteran skill tacticians get with the insanely huge EXP growth the villager class has.
