We all have that moment when we make our first online challenge and something strange pops up that we aren't prepared for and, for one reason or another, can't handle. Last night, I had to relive my moment when I went up against a Moody Smeargle under VGC rules in Pokemon Showdown. This time, unlike the last time, where I was bewildered, and couldn't figure out how to hit it, nor what it was going to do, since I had never seen Moody, I relentlessly smashed it with a rock and made short work of him. This time was nothing like the first time, has this happened to you?

What is a moody smeargle?

Moody is an ability that gives two boosts to one random stat, evasion and accuracy inclusive, and can become very dangerous very fast if not checked. When I first entered the sixth gen metagame, it caught me by surprise because I skipped fifth gen where it was introduced and had never heard of it. It's very tricky to fight back against on stall builds and even more so when you don't expect it, that said, only seven Pokemon have access to it and it's banned in most competitive aspects of play.

So basically, its a combination of download and simple. Sounds like something I should put into a crater and drop another meteor on. Also, choices 3 and 4 are the same.

That's right, Draco Meteor 4 Life! And not quite, one can run away without giving up, yo, and no, although Simple can be threatening in it's own regard, Moody is much more threatening than either of those two abilities because it's endless and consistent. If it was baton passed or skill swapped to anyone else it can defeat most of anything and is severely tough to check if not done immediately.

yeah, but at a simpled stat booster has more control over what gets boosted. With moody on a baton passer, it does no good to get attack boost if your other pokemon rely on special attack.

Can't watch it, but I asume it really shows how moody works on its own with protect. I'm a little more worried about ice beam causing freeze twice in a row, or a max speed darkrai spamming dark void. Both of those have happened to me.

My first online scare wasn't my first online battle in particular but in a battle with a friend of mine. I came over to her house to work on a college project and fool around so when I first battle her, she had a good line-up. Me not being a competitive Pokémon player, I was sure that I was going to lose easily but on our last Pokémon, the odds shifted in my favor and her Pokémon was left incapacitated and I took the win. It was pure luck.

That sounds a lot like a battle I had recently. They had a kyogre, xerneas, and reshiram. It tore my team apart, until I pulled out my ninja garchomp. They switch to their xerneas while I used sandstorm. They had a moonblast miss while I used substitute. They broke my sub while I used swords dance. i swept their entire team with dearthquake.

Props. That's legendary status right there.

Smeargle can spam Dark Void alongside Geomancy and anything else it wants, it is just as threatening.

Sounds like she made you work...

Smeargle in VGC is pretty easy to deal with. Just run Crobat with Kangaskhan and Taunt+Fake Out the Smeargle. Also if they lead Khan Artist (Kangaskhan/Smeargle) just Fake Out Kang (Tha'ts all luck because of speed ties though) and Taunt the Smeargle. Next turn you can KO the smeargle with Kangaskhan's Low Kick and Set up tailwind with Crobat.

smeargle has tricked me a couple of ttimes, but I was much more scared of scizor on my first days of online battling. It goes like this:
  • An innocent and naive J9 discovers Pokemon battle simulators
  • J9 makes a team with his favorite Pokemon from his childhood
  • J9's dreams get broken like a glass shot by a bullet

Scizor's got moves, yo, they don't ever care that they're in a fight, all they do is dance! No one else does that, he's a monster!

I was looking through some of my saved battle videos a while ago and found my first real online scare: my team was goodra, zoroark, and charizard. The first pokemon they threw out was fairy arceus. It took the whole team and a critical sludge wave, but I took it down with zoroark still standing. The other two they had were rotom and shedinja. It went about as well for them as you would expect.
