Flappy Bird was originally released on May 24, 2013[8] with support for the iPhone 5. The game was subsequently updated for iOS 7 in September 2013.[9] In January 2014, it topped the Free Apps chart in the US and Chinese App Stores,[9][10] and later on that month topped the same section of the UK App Store where it was touted as "the new Angry Birds."[4] It ended January as the most downloaded App on the App Store.[11] The Android version of Flappy Bird was released to the Google Play store on January 30, 2014.[12] In early 2014, The Verge reported that the game was earning around $50,000 a day in revenue through its in-game advertising.[13]

Discontinuation
On February 8, 2014, Nguyen announced on Twitter that the game was to be removed from both Apple's App Store and Google Play, writing at 11am UTC: "I am sorry Flappy Bird users, 22 hours from now, I will take Flappy Bird down. I cannot take this anymore."[14] He went on to say that taking down the game has "nothing to do with legal issues".[15] On February 9, 2014, almost exactly 22 hours after this announcement, the game was removed from both Apple's App Store and Google Play.[16] Following the removal, many media outlets reported that several merchants on eBay were offering phones that had the app pre-installed for up to US$900 or more.[17][18][19][20][21]

The removal also spawned fan-made remakes and parodies of the game, such as the web-based Flappy Doge, a variation based on the Doge internet meme.[22]

its quite shocking when i saw this :p
and in app store there is now a bubble fish - the exact some but a fish :p

I was reading an article (I forget where sadly) that was showing all the Flappy Bird clones that have already popped up. It doesn't surprise me at all. Mobile game libraries are filled with cheap knockoffs, and its not like Flappy Bird had much if any original assets of their own anyway.

I'm not really sure what the developer "cannot take"? Criticisms should be expected when you rip off other peoples efforts. $50,000 should make it easy to accept justified complaints.

Oh well, Flappy Bird is a cheap gaming footnote that few will remember in time anyway.

i don't get why he couldn't take it anymore :?

Hmm... He could have gotten in hot water with Nintendo for using the pipes from Super Mario Bros.
Anyway, I wasn't looking forward to get it, and more, if the Android version is removed, I bet that there will still be .APK (Android Package File) files roaming on the net for people really wanting to test the game that much.

thats what i heard he got sued because he was using nintendo pipes

Nintendo has denied that, more than once actually. Nintendo is never shy discussing when they take legal action, so I doubt they went after the Flappy Bird dev.

Maybe he was getting tired of all the hype with Flappy Bird for some reason and just wanted to take it down. In time this will be all but forgotten no doubt

Using pipes from a Mario game hardly justifies suing imo The game in itself is original

Actually the game is hardly original. Much like Angry Birds became very popular but were clone titles, so is Flappy Bird. I wasn't surprised when reading about it - apps are saturated with ripoff games!

Oh ok. I thought those were just conspiracy theories lol

Well there probably are plenty of them too, lol. I wouldn't doubt it with how much attention this game has gotten. Someone even made a version of it for DSiWare using Petit Computer. Clones of clones - it gets crazy!

Yeah, and some of those clones aren't even that good. For example, Flappy Doge is really terrible with the clicking, which means it's either much easier or much harder depending on the person.

I was reading (forget where) that apps with the word 'flappy' are starting to get flagged. I think on Twitter a low budget developer was saying his clone got rejected because of it. He had to re-submit it with a name change.

Well that's a start for getting rid of clones. Maybe in a few years or so they won't have to flag that word anymore because hopefully Flappy Bird will be forgotten about by then.

I should say that you guys be amazed by the amount of clones created by people far most The App Splashy Fish is one of the best legit not cloned but the same concept , if it's taken down and u still have the game it shouldn't be a shock.
