Getting back into Pokemon

As you may or may not have seen in other posts from me, I started playing Pokemon when Yellow came out for the GBC. I then bought red & blue. I then got married & had children so I stopped playing. I then started playing Pokemon TCG with my 4 sons last year. They've been so into it that they are now playing the video games, which has now reignited my interest in it as well. The kids have been playing Omega Ruby for several months now, & just recently, I bought Alpha Sapphire for myself. I feel, though, as if I'm missing a lot. Is there a set of previous Pokemon games I should also pick up to kind of catch me up? I know there have been remakes (AS and OR being 2 of them) so I'm thinking I would need to pick those up too.... Can anyone tell me what I should get?

If you are ok with playing roms, then you should play the following:
-Crystal
-Ruby or Sapphire
-Emerald (yes, both this and the above)
-Diamond or Pearl
-Platinum (same thing with Emerald)
-Heart Gold or Soul Silver
-Black, White, Black 2 or White 2 (any one is fine, I suggest Black)

If you are getting the games retail, then play these:
-Crystal
-Emerald
-Diamond or Pearl
-Platinum
-Heart Gold or Soul Silver (these two are optional)
-Black or White

By playing the games I listed above, you can catch up on all the advancements in the games, have lots of fun and you will learn everything you need without forcing yourself to learn everything at once! Hope this helped!

Cool. That sounds good to me. I'd rather get the games so I'll do your second option. Also, I noticed that X&Y are left out. Are those not necessary since I have ORAS?

Being that I no longer have a GB, GBC, GBA, or DS, Crystal & Emerald are probably out for me since I can't play those....

Those two, while great games, have pretty much what ΩR/AS offers, but tend to revolve more around stylizing your character and exploring the areas. The actual reason for making the X/Y games like this was to show how Pokemon would look with a full 3DS environment and to show off the specs of the 3DS. They do these things beautifully, however, almost everything you do post-game is kinda boring as it all involves going around Lumiose City. If you think you can afford it, then you should get one of them too! The list above is just made to help you catch up on the new mechanics, meet the newer Pokemon as they were introduced and to see the notable differences between the different Generation / Consoles / Regions! Also, about the second list, I made that with the prices in mind, as even just a used copy of Crystal/Emerald costs ~50€ where I am!

Definitely nogo on Crystal and Emerald. I don't have the systems to play those on anymore.... If I needed to I could play the roms for those. I'd also like to try & catch pokemon on the other games that I can't catch in ORAS. If that were the only thing that I wanted to do, what would my list look like then?

Just to be able to get all the Pokemon with all the exclusive moves, get Platinum, Heart Gold/Soul Silver and Black 2/ White 2!

Saw how much soul silver and heart gold were. Wow. Still pricey.

They have been like that for quite some time now.
I don't think you should play X&Y until your finished with the rest maybe.
