I bought this game a few days ago (so what if I still love my PS2? ) and while I haven't played it too far I thought I'd post my impressions here and see if anyone else has or would like to play it.
Are you one of those people who, as I said in my Halloween 2: Trick or Treat review, read R.L. Stine's Goosebumps as a child but now think you're a big boy and are ready for some really scary stuff? I am one of you
Ghosthunter for the PS2 isn't a scary game though. It's just somewhat above Goosebumps level. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if the protagonist is a grown-up former Goosebumps kid. It has ghosts and stuff that is generally perceived to be scary, but it isn't really a keep-you-awake-at-night kind of game. Still, it's a great action game and maybe it'll be spookier to play it at night (I haven't got the chance to do this yet).
The story starts with our likable if somewhat dense hero arriving with another police officer to investigate an abandoned high school where a bunch of students got murdered some years back by an insane professor. The school is condemned to demolition, only when the demolition men turned up with their wrecking balls they heard voices that struck such fear into their hearts that they turned tail and ran back as quickly as their chicken feet can carry them.
The ghosts (of course) in a hidden lab under the school escape because our hero is inquisitive and accidentally sets them free, and his partner gets kidnapped by one of the ghosts. Now he has to hunt them down and do stuff, I don't know, I won't spoil the story anymore.
The reason I bought this game was that everyone absolutely fawned over the graphics, and for the most part I'm not disappointed - the amount of detail is awesome for a PS2 title. There are ocassional visual glitches but the great reputation this game has for its graphics is mostly well-deserved.
The gameplay is fun. You run around in the aptly named run-around mode, and when you spot ghosts you switch to hunting mode which gives you an over-the-shoulder view and a crosshair. First-person aiming is also there, but you can't move while aiming in first person.
The voice acting is good, as is the music; the sound effects are brilliant, and the characters are likeable. That's all I can say so far: I'm glad I bought this game. It's to the PS2 what American McGee's Alice was to PCs.
Has anyone else played this or after my rave praise, would you like to play it?
