If you don't know much about competitive battling you can look up guides or use the Pokemon School form here. I'm still learning too but those helped me a lot. Also, you should probably choose what tier your team is for (most likely OU, thay's the most common one) and pick pokemon from there. They're all about the same level of... Um... goodness. Make sure your team has balanced types, too

Well my current competetive team is

Garchomp
Gengar
Infernape

Wow, very specific.
Check Smogon for movesets.

I'm not sure which Pokemon are the best competitively, but if you are looking for double battles, when Sun and Moon come out, use oricorio, (any one of the 4 forms) and or oranguru. If you don't oricio, is a new bird Pokemon, where the typing and looks of that specific oricorio depends on which island you catch it on. The four different typings are: Fire-Flying, Electric-Flying, Psychic-Flying, and Ghost-Flying. What makes this Pokemon so great for double battles is it's ability. It's ability is called dancer. This ability let's it automatically use a dancing move right after it's been used (an example being: swords dance), without it actually counting for it's turn. This means you can quickly boost it's stats and make it extremely powerful by having it's partner using dance type moves, so oricorio uses it, and it doesn't count for it's turn. This can be especially useful if used with dragon dance, as it increases both attack and speed. Next oranguru. Oranguru is a Pokemon Moon exclusive with the normal and psychic types. It comes with either the ability Inner Focus (won't flinch) or Telepathy (Can't be hurt by allies attacks in double battles) Personally, as I would primarily use oranguru for double battles I'd take Telepathy. It also get's a special move that's exclusively his called instruct. Instruct makes it ally use the move it last used. This can be used greatly, especially with moves like hyper beam, and giga impact, because I'm assuming it'll still attack even though it's not supposed to because they're so powerful. This makes this Pokemon extremely useful. + It can also be combined with moves like earthquake, because if you have telepathy it won't be hit by it, and then you can use instruct so it's ally uses earthquake twice in a row!

But Sun and Moon is months away and you don't know about their stats

That's true, but Sun and Moon is only a month away so it's really not that far away. But also pretty much the whole point of using oricorio is that you can quickly boost their stats using dragon dance, and swords dance to easily make it more powerful. Also I doubt oranguru would be particularly good by itself, but the whole point of it's ability, and the instruct move is to act as a support Pokemon for the really powerful ones. It makes the other pokemon attack again, which can make it really devasting, and for powerful moves that will attack both opponents like surf, discharge, and earthquake, it won't get hit or take any damage. This would mean the opponent would have to attack it to get rid of it. So if for some reason it doesn't do much for support, it will have to be attacked so it doesn't become a burden for the opponent, giving the powerful Pokemon a couple of more turns to attack, + even while oranguru is being attacked it can still support by having the powerful Pokemon attack twice.
