I think it would just matter if you had lunatic difficulty on. But a good combination would be giving a mage with MU. As the MU is mostly Magic, the Sage/Mage would greatly increase its stats and with high relationship, he/she might even do a 2nd attack or defend you. In the end, it depends entirely on you.

I think some really good pairings are one Tharja and Henry because Henry with those crits and Tharja helped out a lot, Lon'qu and Cherche because they just make a great tag team Lon'qu with the damage and crits and Cherche with the assists and the protects and Lon'qu gets a lot better as an Assassin btw then the last and best pairing is Olivia and Donnel. What you do is you get Donnel up to lvl 30 then turn him into a mercenary then Hero and boy is he OP as for Olivia get her up t level 30 also then Myrmiridon then Assassin then pair them up get them married and they are OP NOTHING CAN STOP THEM!!!!

I always made Donnel mercenary, then Hero, then Fighter, then Hero again for some reason. Also Berserker Henry is beautiful

Olivia paired to Lucina.
Lissa paired to Robin.

Im using this pairing till end of the story mode.
The almost kill everything that attack them.
Then the support do the cleanups.

Good pairings can be Cherche with Frederick, since Frederick can get a speed and power boost, MU with a mage or sage with increases their already powerful magic and Lon-qu with Kjelle which increases lon-qu's defense and attack.
