I'm an average player and I've been looking for ways that i can get better at the game. Does anyone have any tips?

Learn short hopping. It's a good technique for characters with good air game.

Make sure you're using different strategies so that you won't be predictable.

Make sure you go in with a plan. Rushing head-in will only make you vulnerable.

If you shield an attack, learn what you could do. You can grab, attack, and more.

Don't constantly roll. It's extremely punishable.
You can find a bunch of tips online.

It is a good way to improve by those of which saltypepper had said . Try to get some practice on your character or favorite character main so that you can easily pop up a few great damaging combos . Always try to get to know your opponents character so that you can interpret some threats by them .

It will be easy to learn , it only takes some time but try to enjoy it while in doing so :p Here is a site with some tips

Hope that helps :D

Try to be unpredictable and move around a lot. >.<)/

Also, vary your moves so your opponent will be like "wtf" .
For example, if you were to dash with ZSS acting like you were going to do a dash attack and then you use the taser-gun thing instead. \o/

Only block/dodge when necessary. Make sure that if you're gonna use a certain move, you can get down safely without being punished T-T

It's all about playing mind games with your opponents. You don't want your opponent to know what you're up to, or else things won't end well for you. You should also play a good mix of offense and defense, as this is a great way to win matches. Developing differing combos for the characters you play as will also help with becoming better.
Just because someone online rekts you in every match doesn't mean it's impossible to beat them. You just have to study their moves and their patterns, then really fight when you think you get the gist of their style. This can be extremely hard to do considering that they're almost always attacking.

The above pieces of advice are excellent. I'll put in some shield-related advice.
  • The R button is your lifeline: From experience, I've learned that mastering shielding is essential to winning. Don't shield so much that they'll learn to grab you, but use it when they're attacking you and sidestep/roll well.
  • Have patience: If you get locked in by an opponent who'll also shield, move around you and try to hit just like you are doing, try not to be the first one to drop your guard. Or if you must, try to jump out of the way (which can still result in you taking a hit).

Aside from all the gameplay mechanics that everyone covered EXTREMELY well, I believe another factor to this is just getting experience fighting all kinds of opponents. At my school, I was able to get a bunch of players together for a few tournaments and we all got to experience different ways people play certain characters; this is key because analyzation of a character can vary from person to person which is evident in their play.

There's gonna be a tournament at a convention nearby me soon and hopefully I can participate in it. If I can advise you to do anything it's to play all sorts of different Smashers that are available locallyand if possible even participate in tourneys if you want to get better in a competitive sense.@

I recommend trying multiple characters!

I started maining Jigglypuff because I like battling in the air and liked her attacks. Before that I was trying luigi and Lucario (I use both though)

Same for Fox, I liked how he felt and moved and now I use him a lot :3

Also there's this technique called DI (Directional Input)

It's when you move the control stick towards the stage to decrease how far yo go when hit by an attack. It can also be used to increase it if you need to escape from combos.

The first thing is to learn your character which is essential to being a pro player. Know what your character can do and what their limits are and exploit them accordingly. And when battling, punish your opponent. Don't go rushing into an opponent with a dash attack. Mix up your options and think outside the box a bit. Predict their action and go on the defensive a lot.

Get good with combos and learn lots of grab combos. Try to be better at off stage combat for early games. Predict your opponents moves (mindgames) and just dont be predictable. Learn your characters weakpoints and where to draw the link. Learn match ups. And just practice! Practice makes perfect

I do believe in practice makes perfect. I remember in brawl online I kept getting owned by other players with my Marth and I didn't know why but I said I don't care anymore. But it seems that I wasn't training with my Marth and that's how I am unstoppable with my Shulk in sm4sh.
