For those who struggles in for glory 1vs1 matches and want to play competitively, you have come to the right place. My name is Shelton and I am a competitive smasher, but I am not really that experienced in smashing competitively (but I do play very good) Anyway, here are the tools that I have learned and use that will help you become successful in a for glory 1 on 1 match. If you follow these strategic steps, then you will have a chance of winning a match with not only your main, but almost any character you use in general.
1. Spacing
Spacing is your bread and butter in any match and once you master it, you can dish out damage without really taking some yourself. For example, Ness is fighting a Marth, and Marth's long range attacks can interfere with Ness's spacing especially if he lands a tipper. So he utilizes his range in order to keep Ness in a bind and limit his options. But Ness's forward aerial has decent range and can rack up some decent damage if he can keep distance and keep his opponents at bay. Projectiles also can be useful for spacing since they can also limit ones options from afar and cause the opponent to go on the defensive.
2. Punishing and Play Defensively
All character will have a move that can have start up and ending lag, so use that as your advantage. If a character runs up and uses a dash attacks or use a laggy move, grab them or use a tilt/smash depending on the percent. Punishing can be really useful when battling spammers because you will always make them end up in a bad position. Make sure you don't always make careless mistakes because it will cost you in a match. Learn how to spot dodge and shield effectively because defense is really vital other than being offensive all the time.
3. Mind games
Whenever you battle an opponent who roll spams and attacks frequently with a tilt and such, be sure to bait then punish no matter what. Also, the moves that they spam frequently can stale out so don't be afraid if you get hit with it. Also, be sure to evade those attacks as best as you can and then punish them. For the opponent's who roll spans, don't be afraid to predict their roll, although it can be difficult to do so.
It may take sometime to predict because predicting is all about timing and studying the foe's playstyle, but depending on the character, it can dictate how easy/hard it can be.
4. ATs (Advanced Techniques)
If your character has many advanced techniques, be sure to practice them in training mode so you can grasp the timing of them so you can easily exploit them in a match. At first, it can be difficult so remember to keep trying and trying until you get it. This is not important but it is recommended so it can be apart of your playstyle.
5. Learn your Character
Some characters in the game has very distinct playstyle that would take time getting used to so be sure to take time and pick your main that you enjoy playing as and learn the ins and outs of the character before battling other people. This is the most important part because you wouldn't have much weaknesses when you pit your character against a skilled player with a character that has better match ups then that character.
6. Learn how to DI (Directional Influence)
Di is also important in order to keep yourself from losing a stock and it really benefits since the rage mechanic exists in Smash4. The lightest of characters rely on this greatly while the heavyweights benefit from this since they can be at 140% and are still alive in certain instances and the rage mechanic bolsters their already raw power. This can be a lifesaver if you get sent flying off the stage early.
Last but not least, Learn your character's Killing moves and edgeguard prowess. All character have kill moves which can be tilts, smashes and even aerial attacks, so be sure to use them when the time is right but don't spam them because they can stale out or it can lead you to being punished. Also, safeguarding is simply sending the opponent to the edge of the stage and jump off and use an aerial that can gimp or even KO an opponent.
This list seem long but this should be helpful for anyone who wants to show off their skills, be sure to follow all procedures in order to witness best results and remember to not give up and keep battling other players and learn from them.
