Having only played Persona 4, are SMT games similar to that?

AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

*phew* ok, in all seriousness, not really. Persona 4 is filled with anime tropes, and accepting the dark parts of yourself that you normally don't want to admit. Shin Megami Tensei on the other hand, is a much much darker rpg. Usually there are a few reoccurring themes with it. It takes place in Tokyo, it's either during the middle or beginning of the apocalypse with demons running rampant, and you pick tough moral choices, which decide your alignment between Law, Chaos, or Neutral. On the Law side, there's God and his angels. Usually, they want to take take away personal freedoms from the humans so they'll live in a safe society. On the Chaos side, there's Lucifer and his demons. They're the opposite, and wish to live in a world where anyone can change it assuming they have a strong enough will. And then there's the Neutral side, which is usually the hardest route to get. Neutral side rejects both the other sides' philosophy and want a world with both some personal freedom and some laws. None of the sides are just good or bad, as they all have good and bad parts to them. As far as combat goes, it's usually similar to Pokemon, but some few differences. Instead of fighting one monster at a time, it's you and your party of demons all fighting at once, and if you hit an opponent with their weakness, you can get an extra turn to attack. If you want to recruit, you have to talk to the demon and convince them/bribe them to join. Saying more would make this sound more complicated then it is, so I'll leave it at this; Persona really isn't like SMT, there's a reason Persona doesn't have the SMT name anymore

Basically, the person above me has it right. SMT is considered the darker side of the coin in terms of SMT vs. Persona. Persona itself is a spin-off of the main SMT series but, save for a few cameos, references, battle system inspirations and reoccurring monsters, they are essentially two completely different series.

The Persona series is more-or-less based on the studies of C.G. Jung. It revolves around the ego and the superego, the conscious and unconscious. The earlier games--that is, Persona 1, Persona 2: Innocent Sin and Persona 2: Eternal Punishment--are considered to be the "darker, edgier" games with the psychology themes a bit more obvious while P3 and P4 introduced the more "dating sim" aspects that most newcomers are familiar with.

SMT is generally the struggle between law, chaos and neutral, with neutral generally being the "true" path. Law tends to represent order at the cost of freedom, or free will. Chaos is described as a world where there are no laws, no social classes, not restrictions but, if you are too weak, you will be consumed and subjugated by the strong. The neutral path typically sets you against law and chaos, becoming a balance of both entities the gives way to hope, which both law and chaos lack. SMT is notorious for its incredibly difficult enemies and also its usage of Judeo-Christian deities that usually represent law and chaos.

Tl;dr: No, SMT is not like Persona. But that shouldn't stop you from trying them out, if you'd like.

Ugh...Toxic got here before I did >.<

The closest match that would be to persona 4 would be persona 3/FES. Although persona 3 has a darker side to that of persona 4, it's still close in match. SMT on the other hand is a completely different story from Persona, so no, persona is not the same as smt, as stated by the two above me.

The closest you'll get to Persona games is Danganronpa really. Rather depressing

Persona 4 is actually the more lighthearted persona games. P1,2 and 3 had darker stories compared to p4. The combat system is a bit similar to p1 and 2 because of the 'contact' move but other than that is completely different. If you mean the waifu simulator part of p4 you will only find it it P3,4 and maybe 5. As SalSymbolic said, the main series is about Law vs Order vs Neutral.

Law is God not believing in the unpredictability of free will thus wanting to take it away. Thus, no freedom.

Chaos is Lucifer having faith of the unpredictability of humans. Thus, no safety.

Neutral is like our current world, laws and freedom. Neutral is usually the hardest and canon path. Thus, balanced world.

Tl;dr SMT is different and darker but still very good games.

SMT is a bit darker and deals with more demons from my experience. The game play is pretty different unique also

In short SMT games are much more darker in ton then the persona games . There are some persona games that have a dark ton to them but they are the much more older games. For example Persona 2 innocent sin and Persona 2 Eternal punishment have darker stories too them then Persona 3 or 4 does but all of the SMT games have stayed on the darker side with the stories even since the older games.
