Help me on deciding what armor to use

Sorry, did you mean gunlance? If you did, and if you want to keep using the gunlance, then i would recommend a full Gogmazios set, with a Aether Geghard matching gunlance. If you are still Hr8 or below, you have a LONG way to go until you can fight gogmazios. Normal G-rankers can get pretty good armor still though. I would recommend for the weapon either the:

Now, Lance/Gunlance aren't really my preferred fighting style, And I would recommend getting the Kushala X armor with its Daora's Samudra Insect glaive. Of course, you will have to upgrade the glaive a lot before you can actually use it, but i recommend following this guide. It makes the Insect Glaive totally OP.
. Follow it EXACTLY and you will be fine. Of course, you will definitely need to upgrade all of these armors until you get to divine and then they are usable. Most people don't bother upgrading their armor to max because they are just to lazy to go get more heavy armor spheres unless its in a quest reward. I'm just telling you, when you unlock the G2 quest Volcanic Hollow Harvest tour, Set aside a week or so JUST to mine it. It will be worth it. If your lucky, you will come back each time with about 6-8 heavy armor spheres and 3 strong armor spheres. If your not the you will come back with 4-5 heavy and 1-2 strong. If luck has a vendetta against you, your gonna come back with 1-2 heavy and 0 strong. Once you upgrade it all through heavy and strong, you will get to divine sphere and you should probably stop there, as the best chance you will ever have at getting some are G rank specialists guild quests. And even in those they are a rarity. Some armors will ask for a special armor sphere in between heavy and strong, and it will be called true armor sphere. Here is where to find that, or rather, how to MAKE it.

Those are VERY special, since if you combine it with armor stone, you get Heavy armor spheres. Now, when you were a noob and if you happened to like doing the quest Sand Blasted, you are in in luck. Not only does the quest give access to the EX versions of the D. Mohran's armor, but it also gives armor stones quite frequently. (Make sure you bring 5 Mega pickaxe's when you battle him) You can also combine armor stones with other ores to make true armor spheres and strong armor spheres, as well as all the other armor spheres.
