Spin Off How do I get those extra lives in Pokèmon Shuffle?

Recently, when I played Pokèmon Shuffle, I had a tiny counter next to my lives. They were extra lives for my lives? So? How did I get those? And how do I get more extra lives without using money?
 
Well it is an extra amount of lives. There isn't really much ways that I know of to get extra lives other than beating the boss pokemon at the end of each area. I think you get the little counter thing when you beat a boss pokemon and still have some hearts left. It has happened to me before but it isn't really anything special :p
