I really would like to know how because whenever I shade, I just darken whatever I'm drawing in different spots. I'm not an artist either. Any tips? Please and thank you.

Shade relative to where the light source in the drawing is. Shadows that flow down when the light is directly or somewhere above the subject.
I am no expert on the subject and I am absolutely sure that there are more people here in the forums that can give a better answer than me.

Hello there~
As an artist myself, I'll share with you a few things that I did!
First of all, you need to figure out where your light source will be. Does your light come from behind? Above? Right? Left? The area closer to the light is the lightest area. Deeper areas will be darker while areas that pop are highlighted/lighter. Also, to shade, do not pick colors from the same area/tone. Few examples are below.
Notice how I moved to the right on my color wheel before picking a darker color? This makes the colors pop more instead of having a monochrome/monotone area. It can be used with traditional coloring too, just notice the difference in shades and don't be afraid to experiment!
Also, try to observe things from real life. Notice how a table is shaded when the light falls on it for example. Notice the shading on the folds, skin, couch and so goes on! Feel free to drop a message if you have any further questions, I'll be glad to help or provide you with a few tutorials~ I hope this was helpful!
