you cant the thing u can do if u dont want to play it as a controller is dont touch the gamepad while playing the game u are playing some games or levels may need the game pad

Well if you move the GamePad very far away from the Wii U then turn on the wii U or turn off the gamepad then that'll work.

You can not sadly. The wii u aways has to be on. Go to settings and turn off the display and it will temporarily fix it.

It's impossible dude, they just work together, you know, one depends about the other, there's no way to turn off just one of them. At least you can turn off your TV, I think it's pretty cool! xD

my friends Wii U pad was smashed all together, but his Wii U still works, so maybe smash your game pad?
But no its not possible I believe

I don't have a Wii U. However, I have heard people talking about this. Someone said that if you take the gamepad away from the system far enough to sever the signal then you can turn it off. But, like I said I don't own one so not sure if this helps any.
