How do you buy download codes?

I've been wonderin' for a long time now, how do you buy download codes for 3DS games? I was supposed to geive my friend a game for his Birthday but I don't know how to give it as a code instead of me getting it. Anyone knows how to give the game as a code? lol

Nintendo now has an online store where you can purchase North America region 3DS and Wii U game download codes - http://www.nintendo.com/eshop/

Find the game that you want and click "Buy Digital". You will need a US or Canada credit card though.

In stores I think they also sell download codes. If your friend has a European region 3DS, you can use GAME.co.uk. That's the website I use to purchase EU region download codes for members here. They accept PayPal by the way.

You can buy download codes by going to GameStop/EBGames too, and Best Buy also has them (I don't know where you live so these are the ones i can think about for USA/Canada at the moment), if like me you don't use a credit card.
