How exactly do you skip ranks in Splatoon 2 during ranked battles?

I don't think it's random.

If you manage to get through a rank without any cracks in your meter i think gets you a skip. I think getting knockouts also increases your chances, but it might just be not having cracks.
Note: this means you can have one loss, as the meter doesn’t crack till the second loss.

Correction: most people on the internet seem to agree that i am wrong. They say that the power level in rank X is active for everyone, just hidden. If you have won enough to fill your meter, it is impossible for your power level to not be within the amount required for the next rank. However, if you won more games without losing, or won some games where the game knew the enemy team power level was greater, there is a good chance you power level was raised high enough to reach a rank higher than the one next in line. Somebody on the internet said they even ranked from s+4 to s+9 which would require winning games against players with a much higher power level.
