Fantasy Life How to add characters to your party in Fantasy Life

I think it's a bit more complicated than simply talking to them to add them to your party after getting the little ribbon text on the screen saying you can invite <insert character's name here> to the party. I've tried and no dice.

So how would I go about adding a character to my party to help me during my journey in Fantasy Life?

The only thing I can come up with is that I have to be the same class as the character but I haven't tried that one yet.

Remember what I said about checking your mailbox when you forgot how to do something ?

Press X when near a character you were allowed to invite, then you'll see a "press Y to invite" at the bottom
