How to get trophy points and what are they used for?

Welcome to the community, Jake. Basically, you get trophy points for post count milestones (eg. 25 posts, 50 posts, 100 posts). See the full list here - http://forum.3dspedia.com/help/trophies
They're used to promote your user title (eg. New Kid on the Block) :
Of course, you can add a custom user title at any time,
Use your computer's mouse to hover over your username from the navigation menu and a drop-down list should appear. Select Personal Details, scroll down to Custom Title and enter a new title.
