WARNING: THIS MAY JUST BE MY 3DS.

Anyways when I got my 3ds the L button wasn't working well the R button tho it was 100% fine
so what I did was blow into the L button and it started working I repeated this before a smash bros match to make sure it didn't stop working during the match.

Let me know if it working or not.

it happened to me but it was on my dsi my L button never worked only my R button

that is very odd I have never had a problem like that have you had anything on the 3ds to make it sticky because when you blow on it makes it moist so the stick isn't there for a while. it could be also that itmhas been used so harshly it broke and when you blow t works for a bit idk but that seems like a plausible theory.

This reminds me of old school game cartridges. Blowing was always the solution then.

On topic: I think this is an isolated issue and unique to your 3DS only. I'm pretty sure malfunctioning L/R buttons won't start working again with just a blow.

My L button stopped working and blowing into it helped for a little while, but after a few times it stopped working permanently, so I had to replace the ribbon cable inside.

Well mine l and r button are working properly !!but sometimes i problem occurs they might not work due to lot dust settle on l and r button and they jam it and call for Nintendo helpline for help !!!

I know the fix for this. All you need is a tooth brush that is dry and clean. All you need to do is rub your tooth brush in the gaps of the l and r buttons. What this does is clean out any dirt or gunk you have in there. This works on any other controller, handheld, or the gamepad. It can help, trust me. wash your hands before you play, it can help you prevent the dirt from coming in to the gaps.

Though I never really had the case that my Nintendo 3ds L and R buttons stopped working , but I guess that sometimes dust and stuff get under there and blowing them works . Or sometimes you drop your 3ds or something and the button gets damaged . Blowing into the buttons would definitely be the first thing I do if that happens though :D
