Is it possible to play Splatoon using only the Wii U's GamePad?

Is it possible to play Splatoon using only the Wii U's GamePad or is a television's screen necessary?

I'm fairly certain that it is not Off-Screen Play compatible. A TV is necessary.

The Gamepad displays the map of the turf and the main action occurs on the TV. Which is the main reason why I can't get it bc my TV is hogged 24/7 so I can only play on the Gamepad... it looks really fun though..
