ive been getting into the hacking scene with android devices, seeing the pros and cons,
and i must say im impressed with what it can do, but is it worth it?
will it affect my phone in anyway when it comes to calling or texting others?

It won't affect the basic features of your phone. However, it might allow you to install applications that requires admin access (root) like AdAway, who blocks all possible types of ads (in-app ads, and in-browser adds) or that allow you to easily set up HomePass spots (I recall seeing an how-to for Android on GBATemp once...).

On another hand, it voids your warranty, and is risky. The chances of bricking your device are small, but they still exist, so, it's a do at your own risk thing.

If you're not sure of what it could do to your phone, the very simple answer to this question is do not do it. If you're sure and don't mind potentially ruining your phone, then go right ahead. There are many benefits to rooting your phone, as D4rkDragon stated, such as being able to install apps that didn't get filtered through the Play Store. Proceed with caution.

Rooting your android usually does no harm (except if you are being creative and unplug your cable while in recovery).

What can be harmful is what you do afterwards. For example, I've done so much stupid things with my phone that I can only boot it after it failed booting once then pressing Vol- until it vibrates then letting it go (or it goes in Safe mode) :p

But once again, I've done a LOT of stupid things, so as long as you are reasonable (Basically, only install apps when you understood their description, and only use their options when you understood what they do. And always keep a rom ready to flash somewhere on your computer), really, nothing harmful should happen.

It depends on what you want to do with your Android. I always root my android because I use a lot of apps that require root permissions. If you want to flash a new ROM on your android phone then Rooting can come in handy as well. It gives you a lot of choices when it comes to tweaking your android phone and getting the most out of it, as long as you know what you're doing.
