Is Super Smash Bros like free advertising for Nintendo? I mean honestly, how many people knew who Shulk was before this game?
And for the younger audience, more mature series like Fire Emblem are introduced to them.

So what do you think?

For me I haven't really thought about it and I don't really understand the meaning of free-advertising too much, plus I still don't know who shulk is?I'm not really into these smash bros things.

Yes. Smash is easily advertising free of charge for Nintendo. Smash is the thing that introduced Fire Emblem, Kid Icarus, and Xenoblade Chronicles to me! Just an example, is how Melee brought Japanese only Fire Emblem, and quickly turned it over worldwide! And all those people who didn't know about Xenoblade Chronicles, well, they're really feeling it now! :sneaky:

I know! I remember, many years ago, my friends and I all playing Melee together, saying "I like Roy/Marth! He's cool!" Now Fire Emblem Awakening! :p

Haha, I didn't even know that it was a all star battle royal, I kinda just recognized a few, used them and then thought "man this game is fun!"

It's ironic because I had just finished completing Xenoblade Chronicles about a week before I even knew Shulk had been rumored to be in SSBWii U/3DS. So it was quite the surprise and really unexpected. Xenoblade Chronicles is a good game imo. He has omniscient power!

Ha ha very funny. If that was true then we'd be getting more Metroid, F-Zero, and Wario games. However you could say that considering all the Smash 3DS trophies are of games for sale on the eShop or physically like Ocarina of Time 3D.

I don't think it's free advertising; it doesn't help their franchises as much as it technically could if it was made to simply advertises other games. A number of people might try the other games after playing Smash, but after all, making a good game and paying a whole lotta money for the multiplayer servers isn't exactly 'free.'

It isn't free, no siree, but SSB is basically an ad for all the games represented. Granted, you can say that about any crossover of any kind: a means to get an audience of one X to try another X. Would younger fans that play Mario or Pokemon games ever take a second look at games like Fire Emblem or Xenoblade Chronicles otherwise, or gamers that never tried out other franchises bother to otherwise? It was through Smash that I got interested in other Nintendo franchises besides Pokemon like Fire Emblem and Legend of Zelda, so you can say it's successful in its purpose.

Now that you mention it, it makes some sort of sense. Anyway it is the ultimate game in which nintendo shows off all its line up, from the very old games that saw the light on nintendo till the latest ones, so probably you may be right. Anyway, I would't buy a game from which I only know the character, to me that does not make any difference.
