Alright. im going to talk about a few things here and im aslo gonna give a basic introduction into competitive terms and strategies.

Q: What is an IV
An IV is an "individual value". The way IV's work is they boost a stat By 1 per IV by the time your pokemon reaches LV. 100. You can breed to get these and pass them down to other pokemon.
Q: What is an EV
An EV is an Effort Value. Effort Values are limited to 252 by stat and each pokemon can only gain 508 EVs altogether. Every 4 EV's in a stat gives you one point in that stat immediately. These are gained through fighting a type of pokemon. (I.e. A single whismer gives a single HP EV)
Q: What is a Set?
A set is a moveset with an EV "Spread" and 4 reccomended moves with a reccomended item.
Q: What is pokerus and what does pokerus do?
Pokerus is a 'Disease' that doubles the EV's gained in battle permanently for a pokemon infected with it. A pokemon has a chance to recover from pokerus and not be able to spread it if your DS clock hits midnight and it is not stored in a PC.

An example Set is:

Mawile @Mawilite
Adamant
252 ATK/ 252 HP/ 4 SPE
- Sucker Punch
- Protect
- Iron Head
- Play Rough

This would mean that Mawile has an Adamant nature and is holding the Item Mawilite. It would also have maxed Attack and HP while investing the rest into speed for EV's, With the moves Sucker punch, Protect, Iron Head and Play rough. If you need help with a moveset, feel free to ask me here and Either I or someone else will get to you.

It's important to keep in mind which pokemon you use on a team for each set. Your team could be based on weather, battle format, or typing. I find that many weather teams appear to be the most successful, especially hail teams and rain teams. However a good doubles team with supporters and attackers is also an interesting thing to run as well. Remember your team has to work together and work effectively in battle, so the sets you use should help make your team do better.
